About the Item

Inspired by her close connection to nature, and by what she calls “the spirit of investigation and observation of the natural world,” Suzi Davidoff creates mixed-media drawings and paintings, prints and installations that examine intricate patterns in nature and the overlaying systems used to observe, map and define organic landscapes. Her work begins with a walk, most often through the West Texas desert where she lives, picking up bits of moss and lichen, handfuls of dirt, and other natural materials. She brings the found objects back to her studio and rubs them into the paper serving as the ground for her compositions, connecting nature itself to her interpretations of it. Suzi Davidoff is based in the Chihuahuan desert of West Texas. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso for her BFA and New Mexico State University for her MA and MFA. Davidoff’s work is the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC; Art in Embassies, Monterrey, MX; and the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso. She has been the recipient of the Mid-America NEA Fellowship and a Ford Foundation/ Pollack-Siquieros Binational Art Award.

Otto Neumann (1895-1975) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. His monotypes evolved from sharp, angular, black and whites to late abstract prints in a variety of colors. Neumann lived through revolutionary changes in the art world of prewar and postwar Germany. He was a prolific artist in Germany during a time of the country’s unprecedented academic and intellectual growth. His early work shows the influence of both French masters like Cezanne and the contemporary style that was then being developed by German Expressionists like Kirchner. A master printmaker, Neumann was also inspired by the works of Albrecht Durer, whose allegorical subject-matter and unmatched drawing technique Neumann would emulate throughout his career. A lifetime preoccupation with the human figure informs his work, with frieze-like human figures recalling ancient Greek art...
