About the artist:
Charles Cobelle, born Carl Edelman (1902–1994), was a modern French master of painting, lithography and a fine muralist, who was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France. He is considered the last link to the great tradition of the Open Line School of Paris.
Biography
Cobelle received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Munich and continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Much more influential in his development, however, were his private studies with Marc Chagall and his apprenticeship in the studio of Raoul Dufy in Menton on the Riviera.
Cobelle lived and painted in Paris until the late 1920s and established himself within the great tradition of the School of Paris.[2] In the late 1920s, Cobelle moved to the United States, where his paintings were immediately sought after by galleries and private collectors alike. Cobelle became a U.S. citizen before the outbreak of World War II. In the late 1940s to 1950s, Cobelle lived in Westport, Connecticut.Charles Cobelle lived in Ridgefield CT in a private lake community called Twixt Hills until his death.
By the 1950s, spurred by the commercial success of his mentor, Dufy, Cobelle had achieved phenomenal success commercially with his Parisian-influenced style. Much like contemporary artists and designers at the time, his designs graced a number of pottery patterns for various pottery companies, including Midwinter Stylecraft, Universal Potteries and Homer Laughlin China...

Salvador Dali was born as the son of a prestigious notary in the small town of Figueras in Northern Spain. His talent as an artist showed at an early age and Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali received his first drawing lessons when he was ten years old. His art teachers were a then well known Spanish impressionist painter, Ramon Pichot and later an art professor at the Municipal Drawing School. In 1923 his father bought his son his first printing press.
Dali began to study art at the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid. He was expelled twice and never took the final examinations. His opinion was that he was more qualified than those who should have examined him.
In 1928 Dali went to Paris where he met the Spanish painters Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. He established himself as the principal figure of a group of surrealist artists grouped around Andre Breton, who was something like the theoretical "schoolmaster" of surrealism. Years later Breton turned away from Dali accusing him of support of fascism, excessive self-presentation and financial greediness.

Zadkine was born on the 14th of July in Vitebsk, a city in Belarussia, on the Dvina.
His father Ephime teaches classical languages at the local seminar.
His mother Sophie Lester descended from Scots, who emigrated at the time of Peter the Great.

His parents send him to Sunderland, in the North of England, where his mother’s family lives.
He studies English and attends modelling courses at the local Art School.
1905-1909
He travels to London without his parents permission where he attends courses at the Regent Street Polytechnicum.
In order to earn his living, he plans to work with a stonecutter.
He visits the British Museum and studies classical sculpture there.
Returns to Smolensk where he produces his first sculpture.
Goes back to London.
1909-1910
Zadkine settles in Paris and studies in the ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Finds a workshop in a building called La Ruche, in the XVe arrondissement.
1911
Zadkine presents statues and drawings at the annual Salon d’Automne and at the Salon des Indépendants.
It is the ‘cubists’ who draw his attention in Paris.
Is essentially close to Russian students who get together in a cafe of the ‘Quartier Latin’.
Has himself called Joe Zadkine until 1914.
1912-1913
Finds a room in the neighbourhood of Montparnasse, in the rue de Vaugirard.
Studies Roman sculpture.
Zadkine is immortalized by his neighbour, photographer Marc Vaux, in his new workshop.
Meets Brancusi, Guillaume Apollinaire, Jacques Lipchitz, Pablo Picasso, Antoine Bourdelle, Leopold Survage and Robert Delaunay.
Henri Matisse visits Zadkine’s workshop.
1914-1915
Exhibition at the Freie Sezession in Berlin, at De Onafhankelijken in Amsterdam (Holland) and at
the Allied Artists Association in London.
Thanks to collector Paul Rodocanachi, he can settle in a workshop in the rue Rousselet.
Becomes friends with Modigliani.
1916-1917
Works as a stretcher-bearer on the front. Produces drawings and watercolours dealing with war.
Zadkine is discharged in 1917.
He says he is ‘bodily and spiritually’ ruined by the war.
After his stay in the Epernay hospital he recovers in Bruniquel, in the southwest of France.

Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know."
About Raymond Pettibon (Americanb. 1957)
Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He applied himself to engraving and etching about 1853, and played a leading and brilliant part in the revival of the etcher's art in France. Altogether he produced over eight hundred plates, comprising portraits, landscapes, scenes of contemporary life, and bird-studies, besides numerous interpretations of other artist's paintings, especially those of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, Gustave Moreau and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. After having been attached to the Sèvres porcelain factory in 1870, he accepted a post as art manager of the Paris atelier of the firm of Haviland of Limoges. He was connected by a link of firm friendship with Édouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and all the other fighters in the impressionist cause, and received all the honors that await the successful artist in France, including the grade of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1889.
Bracquemond was a prominent figure in artistic and literary circles in the second half of the 19th century. He was close to writers such as Edmond de Goncourt and critic Gustave Geffroy, and numbered among his friends Millet and Corot, Henri Fantin-Latour, Degas and the Impressionist circle, and Auguste Rodin. He was one of the more prolific printmakers of his time and he was awarded the grande medaille d'honneur at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. He was also a painter, ceramist, and an innovator in decorative arts. Gabriel Weisberg called him the "molder of artistic taste in his time". Indeed, it was he who recognised the beauty of the Hokusai woodcuts used as packing around a shipment of Japanese china, a discovery which helped change the look of late 19th-century art.
