Cette affiche a été réalisée en 1971, à l'occasion de l'exposition Picasso à la galerie Knoedler à Paris.
L'affiche a été réalisée par Henri Deschamps d'après l'oeuvre Arlequin au Miroir, 1923, de Picasso qui fait partie aujourd'hui des collections du Musée national Thyssen Bornemisza à Madrid. Inv. no. 709 (1979.87), exposée salle 45.
Cette oeuvre, initialement conçue comme un autoportrait, réunit trois personnages chers à l'artiste, tous issus de la Comedia dell'Arte ou du monde du cirque: l'acrobate (costume), l'arlequin (bicorne) et le Pierrot (dont le visage, tel un masque, dissimule l'identité de l'artiste). Comme le précise Paloma Alarco du Musée Thyssen: "Le costume d'acrobate nous transporte dans le monde des saltimbanques et des artistes de cirque ; le chapeau triangulaire est une référence claire à Arlequin ; et le masque dans lequel Picasso transforme son visage est Pierrot, le soupirant éconduit de Colombine qui se complaît dans sa mélancolie en regardant son image dans le miroir, un attribut de la tromperie et de la vanité......Il ne faut oublier qu'à bien des égards Picasso considérait le tempérament d'Arlequin comme similaire au sien et que, tout au long de sa vie, il s'est représenté sous cette apparence à de nombreuses reprises, généralement pour des raisons sentimentales".
Après son voyage en Italie avec Jean Cocteau en 1917, Picasso adopte un nouveau langage artistique inspiré de la tradition classique des peintures de Pompéï et de celles de Raphaël ou Michel-Ange. Toutefois, Picasso n'utilise ce vocabulaire formel classique que pour mieux le réinterpréter et le réinventer servant ainsi son approche libre de la création. Arlequin au miroir représente le couronnement de cette période tout en en signifiant la fin. Dès l'automne 1923 en effet l'artiste évolue progressivement vers sa période surréaliste.
