Additional Details: Historical wood engravings by Pellerin. From Napoleon par l'Image Populaire. Portraits-Scenes-Batailles. [Epinal: Pellerin, 1819 to 1863]-Paris: Pellerin et Cie, 1912. Folio ca. 15 x 22. Wood engravings by Pellerin, Reveille or Georgin. Original hand color. Extensive text below image.
From 1819 to 1863, the firm of Pellerin at Epinal produced a number of secular French historical images by the process of wood engraving, with hand color. It appears the firm kept the plates, for in 1912, Pellerin et Cie issues a group of these images in a portfolio entitled Napoleon pa l"image Populaire. The primary force behind these images was Jean-Charles Pellerin (1756-1836), a clock maker in Epinal, who had the idea to expand production of wood engraved religious images to secular ones also, all for popular consumption. Pellerin's studio originated the print industry in Epinal. Pellerin taught his trade to Reveille, an imperial soldier, who recorded his memories of the campaigns. Reveille then taught Francois Georgin (1801-1863), who continued the firm. Later the firm moved to Paris and it is there that these later impressions were pulled, preserving for us these wonderful popular images which would scarce have survived into this century otherwise.

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's.
Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun.
Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading.
What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...

17th century etching baroque portrait male subject hat realistic print
By Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This is an excellent example of the kind of portraiture produced by Castiglione during the early part of the 17th century. In the image, we see the visage of a man with a mustache, wearing a fur-lined hat topped with a feathery decoration. The image is reminiscent of the work of Rembrandt van Rijn, himself known for his portraits in the form of etchings.
4 x 3.5 inches, image
15.25 x 13.25 inches, frame
Inscribed "GC" in the plate, lower left
This impression is from the edition ca. 1825 from the original plate of ca. 1635.
Unlike many Italian artists, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was profoundly influenced by foreigners. He first studied with local artists in his native Genoa, absorbing not only Tuscan Mannerism and Caravaggism but also the style of Peter Paul Rubens, who had worked in Genoa. From 1621 Castiglione also worked in Anthony van Dyck's Genoa studio. Early on, he was attracted to Flemish animal...
