Etching with aquatint printed in brownish black ink on cream laid paper, 9 3/8 x 7 inches (237 x 176 mm), full margins. In good condition with uniform age tone, several scattered light spots of pin-point-sized foxing, outside of the image area. Lower margin slightly trimmed to exclude the text which would include the name of the artist and publisher. A rich and tonal impression.
"Rassenfosse has often been linked with Felicien Rops as a follower. This is perhaps unfair. One author has said, for example, that while Rops portrayed courtesans, Rassenfosse depicted the daughters of working people. In his intimate nude studies the women have natural elegance, but are not purely objects of desire, as Rops would have made them." [Parisse, Jacques, Actuel XX: la peinture à Liège au XXe siècle. Armand Rassenfosse (6 August 1862 – 28 January 1934) was a largely self-taught Belgian graphic artist, book illustrator and painter. His masterwork was a set of illustrations for Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal.
