Louise (1896-1989) and Else (1898-1985) were the daughters of Hieronymus Heyerdahl (cf. cat. no. 554). Hieronymus Heyerdahl (1867-1959) was a Norwegian lawyer and local politician. He was a member of the Oslo City Council in 1911-1919 and 1923-1925. From 1912-1914, he was mayor of the city, and his experience of the anniversary celebration in 1914 led him to devote much time and energy towards getting Oslo a representative City Hall. Munch painted his portrait for the Gallery of Mayors in the Oslo City Hall, and two similar portraits (private collection and MM M 71). He also made two lithographic portraits (cat. nos. 599 and 600). Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intensely evocative treatment of psychological themes built upon some of the main tenets of late 19th-century Symbolism and greatly influenced German Expressionism in the early 20th century. One of his most well-known works is The Scream of 1893. Born in 1863 in Löten, Norway, famed painter Edvard Munch established a free-flowing, psychological-themed style all his own. His painting "The Scream" ("The Cry"; 1893), is one of the most recognizable works in the history of art. His later works proved to be less intense, but his earlier, darker paintings ensured his legacy. A testament to his importance, "The Scream" sold for more than $119 million in 2012—setting a new record.
