Käthe Kollwitz
Käthe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945) was a German artist who studied both painting and printmaking. However she turned exclusively to print making in the early 1890s. Influenced by fellow German artist Max Klinger, she saw the potential of the print for social commentary. Prints could be reproduced inexpensively and in multiples, allowing her to reach more people.. Her most famous art cycles, including "A Weavers' Revolt" and "Seven Woodcuts on War", depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, She is now more widely associated with German Expressionism. Kollwitz was the first woman to be elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts. For the next 50 years she produced dramatic, emotion-filled etchings, woodcuts, and lithographs. Initially, her husband’s working-class patients were models. But eventually Kollwitz’s subject matter became a reflection of her own experience as a witness to both World Wars. She was devastated by the suffering and loss of human life, including the loss of a son in the first war and a grandson in the second. Although Kollwitz’s wrenching subjects and virtuoso technique soon made her work popular throughout Germany and the Western world, they also generated controversy. In 1933, the Nazi government forced her to resign her position as the first female professor appointed to the Prussian Academy; soon thereafter she was forbidden to exhibit her art.

The Dance of Zlatio Zlatev, Original Silver Gelatin Photograph, Bulgaria 1989
By Jacko Vassilev
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Jacko Vassilev, Bulgarian ( born 1951 - )
Title: The Dance of Zlatio Zlatev, Ex Pilot
Medium: Original Silver Gelatin Print
Edition: 19/50
Year: 1989
Story behind the photograph:
The photograph seen above was taken of Zlatio Zlatev who had served for Bulgaria’s King Boris III as his top pilot. When the Communists took the power in Bulgaria, he was offered to work for the new government as a bomber pilot. He refused to work for the new regime and was stamped as an "anticommunist element".
Due to his refusal Zlatio was sent to forced labor political camp where he spent nearly 15 years and fell victim to the totalitarian side of communism. During that time in Bulgaria there were over 50 political camps where they claimed, "The Brain of the Nation was destroyed"!
When Bulgaria become free state from Communism in 1989 a National Celebration was held in the political camp honoring all the people who lost their lives there and granted the survivors as National Heroes! On that day Jacko Vassilev was privileged to witness the celebration of Zlatio and this photograph was HIS DANCE OF FREEDOM!!!!
After the dance, Jacko walked to him and wanted to share his deep emotions of capturing this special moments and told him: "Zlatio, your hands are likes a wings in the air."
And he answered: "My wings..... They broke them, but not the Spirit"!
Artist Bio:
I was born in communist Bulgaria. As a boy, I had dreamed of freedom and a simple life. In my late twenties I put my dreams to the test and attempted to escape the Bulgarian regime. I tried to pass the barbed wire fences guarded by border patrols, but I was caught, beaten and tossed into a slave labor camp. Instead of building up hate, the harsh conditions in the camp built my strength. I learned how to survive. My body suffered, but my mind became clearer. My photography was my artistic expression of the world around me however the communist dictatorship considered it anti-communist propaganda and I had to keep my treasures hidden underground. After the communist regime fell, I traveled around Europe and accomplished my dream of becoming a published photographer in Paris and later moved to the USA.
The willingness to confront even the most difficult obstacle in life strongly informs my work to this day. There is a thread of optimism that connects the people I’ve portrayed, even when they are shown in the most vulnerable moments. There is no difference between myself and them, they are photographers of life, and I am the countryman...

Hiroshige Utagawa grew up in a samurai family in Edo where both him and his father were in the fire service before being orphaned. Hiroshige’s first formal art teacher was Rinsai. Though Hiroshige tried to join Toyokuni Utagawa's studio, he was turned away. In 1811, young Hiroshige entered an apprenticeship with the celebrated Toyohiro Utagawa. After only a year, he was bestowed with the artist name Hiroshige. He gave up his role in the fire department to focus entirely on painting and print design. He studied painting, intrigued by the Shijo school. Hiroshige’s artistic genius wasn’t recognized until 1832 when he became a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition, creating 8000 prints in saturated color.
His series of woodblock prints of the Tokaido road connecting Edo to Kyoto was his breakthrough series known as The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (1832-1833). His most renowned series was known as 100 Famous Views of Edo...

"The brim of her hat loops to make a shadow, the better to show her gaunt profile. Strands of hair writhe against her cheek and complement a fur stole on her shoulder. In 1923 Otto Dix went to Düsseldorf to learn new printing skills, including lithography which would show his drawing skills to better effect. He made a series of character studies, including this affecting portrayal of a pale woman reduced almost to a shadow of herself. Eyes closed to the exquisite world represented by those materials set out by the artist, she seems scarcely aware." - Sotheby's, London, UK
