About the Item
Nobuyoshi Araki
Private Tokyo, 1996
Two Sided Offset Lithograph
Boldly signed and numbered 26/50 by the artist in black marker on the lower right front
33 × 46 3/5 inches
Published by Museum of Modern Art, Frankfurt, Germany
Unframed
This dramatically large, stunning, vintage, limited edition signed two sided photo lithograph print, with a black and white front and a colored photographic back was created on the occasion of Nobuyoshi Araki's exhibition, "Private Tokyo" at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, Germany from June 14, 1996 to January 5, 1997. Hand signed by the artist on the lower right front and numbered from a limited edition of only 50. The work is unframed and can be framed conventionally, just showing the black and white front. Alternatively, we would recommend framing with a die-cut back, an exposed plexi back or in a shadow box to reveal both sides, each of which is very different - to literally reveal two separate works of art. (Just flip the picture around). Collectors item. A very desirable find!
Nobuyoshi Araki Biography
Japanese photographer, Nobuyoshi Araki, is primarily known for his provocative images that combine fine art and photography. Working primarily in black and white photography, the subjects of his work range from food and flowers to Tokyo street scenes. Much of his work refers to Japanese cultural traditions. This is seen in his series, Kinbaku (1979), which features a multitude of photographs of young women in sexual positions, inspired by the Japanese art of rope-tying. Araki has gone on to photograph female musicians such as Bjork and Lady Gaga.
His love of photography began at an early age, whilst at infant school in Japan. He saw this through, developing his skills at Chiba University, where he studied film and photography. Following the repercussions of the end of World War Two, his work responded to the rapid commercial growth in Japan. Alongside popular culture, Araki’s work is heavily influenced by his personal life. He acclaimed fame for his series of photographs in 1971, Un Voyage Sentimental, a series of intimate images of his wife on their honeymoon. He also published Winter Journey in 1991, which documents the final days of her death.
Araki became a key figure in the art world in Japan, after receiving the Taiyo Award in 1964 for his photography project about a boy called Satchin. He has been featured in galleries internationally at many solo exhibitions and contemporary art shows including The Cartier Foundation, Paris (1995), and Contemporary Japanese Art, Hayward Gallery in 2001.

Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is a Tokyo-based photographer. Araki completed his studies at Chiba University’s Department of Photography, Painting and Engineering with a focus on the study of film and photography. His photographic project Satchin earned him the prestigious Taiyo Award in 1964, shortly after he had joined the advertising agency Dentsu, where he worked until 1972. At Dentsu he met his wife Yoko, to whom he paid homage in Sentimental Journey, a photographic record of their honeymoon published in 1971. Eros and thanatos (sex and death) has been a central theme in Araki’s work; an abiding fascination with female genitalia and women’s bodies in Japanese bondage...
