Romare Bearden
PEPPER JELLY LADY Signed Lithograph, Color Collage, African American Culture

1980

$5,975

About

PEPPER JELLY LADY is an original limited edition lithograph by one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, Romare Bearden whose artwork depicted the African-American culture and experience. PEPPER JELLY LADY was printed using traditional hand lithography methods on archival printmaking paper, 100% acid free, hand deckled edges. PEPPER JELLY LADY depicts a rural scene of a black woman standing beside her basket of goods - selling pepper jelly as a rooster crows at her feet while a black steam train travels by in the distance. The main color collage composition is surrounded by a watercolor-like border of image drawings portraying scenes and family memories from Romare Bearden's years spent in Meckleburg County NC. Bearden, born 1912 in Charlotte, N.C., lived for various lengths of time in Pittsburgh, Boston, Paris and New York, and on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean. Pepper Jelly Lady - Edition of 150, from the Presidential Portfolio 1980, published by Democratic National Committee, Washington, D.C. Catalogue reference: Gelburd/Rosenberg GG#56
