About the Item
Following in line with artists before her, like Rembrandt and van Gogh, Sandra Sweeny here presents a self portrait. The image is both direct and subtle not only in its handling of materials, but also in the frank gaze of the artist. She looks directly at the viewer, confronting them with an expressionless, studying face. This portrait, executed as an etching, is built up of hatchmarks, defining the volume of the artist's face and hair. The close cropping of the image, as well as her large eyes, make the portrait even more personal and striking.

Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and housed in a gold finish wood moulding.

Sandra Sweeney
Sandra Sweeney was born in 1947. Though she and her family spent a few years in Oregon, Sweeney was based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Along with being a talented artist, she was a superb framer and worked as the head framer for the David Barnett Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She passed away in 2017.
