I was very happy that John Densmore, drummer of The Doors, asked me to design the cover of his new book “The Seekers,” which tells the stories of his encounters with inspirational figures in his life. All creative people have inspirations that become part of their DNA, consciously and subconsciously influencing their artistic choices and evolution. Some people try to sell the story of themselves as innate geniuses, fully formed from birth, but others acknowledge what they’ve learned from crucial mentors and influences along the way. John Densmore not only acknowledges his inspirations but beautifully, powerfully, and lovingly celebrates mentors, heroes, and peers who have impacted his life’s journey and become part of his DNA. While John and I discussed “The Seekers,” his respect and affection for the remarkable men and women who’ve brought some magic into his life made me envision a tapestry with multiple epic figures whose threads are intertwined with John Densmore himself, the central beating heart and storyteller. Of course, John as the drummer for The Doors is an iconic sage, perfectly able to hold down a book cover by himself. Still, for him it was essential for the cover to convey his generous spirit of camaraderie with those whom he has stood shoulder to shoulder with as well as those whose shoulders he has stood upon.

A major artist of the street art movement, Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s through the dispersion of prints, posters, stickers and murals, related to his Obey Giant campaign, which yielded an international cultural phenomenon. Fairey’s iconic poster of President Barack Obama was adopted as the official emblem associated with the presidential campaign and encapsulates a number of recurring concerns in the artist’s work, including propaganda, portraiture and political power.

Rosie Emerson, born in 1981, is a contemporary artist working almost exclusively on representing the female form. Emerson’s figures draw reference from archetypes old and new, from Artemis to the modern day super model, each solitary figure, an allegory of her own fantasy. Interested in surface, the interplay between photography and painting. Emerson’s works are playful constructs; Photography is used, not as a device for capturing reality but for creating romanticised optical illusions.
Inspired by her love of theatre, performance, shrines and rituals, she uses lighting, costume, set and prop making, alongside printmaking and painting to create other worldly one off pieces. Her photography is inspired by both the drama of the baroque, and ethereal qualities of Pre Raphaelite works. Other important influences include late medieval and renaissance paintings, Japanese prints, and magical realist literature.
