Hudson - Fulton Celebration 1809 - 1909 lithograph

1909

About the Item

Hudson - Fulton Celebration is an original lithograph celebrating the 300 year anniversary of the discovery of the Hudson River. The image shows a portrait of Henry Hudson and a portrait of Robert Fulton. In the background is the Hudson River and Hudson's sailing ship of 1609 in the upper right side and Fulton's steamship, The Clermon , in 1807 in the lower left corner. Published by Joseph Koehler 1909, New York. This lithograph is in good condition. In 1609 Henry Hudson ( 1566- 1611 ) an English sea explorer and navigator was contracted by the Dutch East Indian Company to discover a water passage to India. After several attempts Hudson abandoned those orders and instead sailed across the Atlantic. He eventually sailed up the Hudson River, which was later named after him, and thereby laid the foundation for Dutch colonization of the region. Robert Fulton ( November 14, 1765 – February 25, 1815 ) was an American engineer and inventor who is widely credited with developing a commercially successful steamboat; the first was called The North River Steamboat (later Clermont ). In 1807 that steamboat traveled on the Hudson River with passengers, from New York City to Albany and back again, a round trip of 300 miles, in 62 hours. The success of his steamboat changed river traffic and trade on major American rivers.
