Roger de Valerio
Roger de Valerio, whose real name Roger Laviron was a French designer, poster designer and painter who is more particularly known for his advertising posters. De Valerio studied architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. From 1911–14, he worked as artistic director for the newspaper Le Matin. From 1917–24, he joined the music publisher Salabert for which he produced more than 2,000 covers. In 1926, he was an artistic advisor at Devambez for whom he produced some superb posters, then in 1932, he took over the management of the newspaper Le Rire. From 1936–40, he was an associate director of Perceval editions. In 1933, he taught at the technical school of publicity. In 1940, he decided to retire to Belle-Île-en-Mer to devote himself to painting, then to the illustration of books. He produced 19 engravings for Alfred Jarry's Surmâle. In 1951, he illustrated The Lion and the Hen by Sacha Guitry in the edition of Raoul Solar.
