About the Item
Saul Steinberg's "Sphinx" is a whimsical yet thought-provoking etching that brilliantly captures the artist's unique perspective on the world. Created in 1984, this work is an exemplar of Steinberg's celebrated ability to blend humor, surrealism, and insightful commentary into a single frame. As part of the Disney Contemporary Resort Collection, this piece carries the dual significance of being both a collectible work of art and a testament to a distinctive era in modern art curation.
The etching, measuring 27.38 x 20 inches, is in good condition and is numbered 44 out of an edition of 50, adding to its exclusivity. Steinberg’s depiction of the iconic sphinx reimagined with a playful twist exemplifies his mastery of line and form. The work invites viewers to explore the intersections of history, myth, and contemporary culture—a hallmark of Steinberg's oeuvre.
Steinberg, widely recognized for his contributions to The New Yorker and his ability to translate complex ideas into deceptively simple visual forms, has left an indelible mark on 20th-century art. This piece, with its blend of satire and sophistication, perfectly embodies his signature style. The connection to the Disney Contemporary Resort further enriches its story, linking it to a venue renowned for its celebration of creativity and innovation.
For collectors, "Sphinx" offers more than just aesthetic appeal; it represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of art history. Its background as part of a curated collection for one of the most iconic resorts in the world makes it a valuable addition to any discerning collection. Whether displayed in a private residence or a professional space, this work will undoubtedly spark conversation and admiration, serving as both a visual delight and a cultural artifact.

This Steinberg lithograph is titled Sam's Art, which of course refers to Uncle Sam, the nickname for the United States government. It features his version of the motto seen on our dollar bills, "Annuit Coeptis", which is one of the mottoes found on the Great Seal of the United States. It is directly underneath the "Eye of Providence" and is translated by the US Treasury and State Department as "God (or Providence) favors our undertakings". American President Abraham Lincoln, sitting in front of an easel, is also depicted as an artist in this telling 1960s work.

The American Eagle looks on, perched on a civil war cannon...
