About the Item

This original 1968 Japan Air Lines (JAL) travel poster, titled "Tsuzumi no Ne" (The Sound of the Hand Drum), is a fusion of traditional Japanese art and mid-century aviation marketing. Created by renowned artist Shoen Uemura, the poster features an elegant depiction of a geisha playing the tsuzumi, a traditional Japanese hand drum. The composition exudes grace and cultural richness, inviting viewers to experience the refined beauty of Japan through the lens of its national airline. Shoen Uemura (1875–1949) was a pioneering female artist in Japan, celebrated for her bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) in the Nihonga style. Her work often portrayed women with dignity and subtlety, challenging the norms of her time. Uemura's art played a significant role in elevating the status of female artists in Japan and continues to be revered for its delicate beauty and cultural significance. Japan Air Lines was established on August 1, 1951, in the aftermath of World War II, as Japan sought to rebuild its economy and infrastructure. The airline began domestic operations later that year and launched its first international service in 1954, flying from Tokyo to San Francisco. JAL quickly expanded its network, becoming the country's flag carrier in 1953. Over the decades, the airline has grown into one of the world's leading carriers, known for its commitment to safety, service, and showcasing Japanese culture to the world. This poster is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. It is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
