Sir William Segar
Heraldry Crest : Clifford

1764

About the Item

Baronagium Genealogicum: or the Pedigrees of the English Peers. Sir William Seagar (c1554-1633). Re-issued by Joseph Edmonson. London, 1764. Engraving with later hand-color. What better tribute to generations of men than to have a symbolic crest made depicting what would become known as the family ‘Coat of Arms’. This legacy would transcend the generations to come bestowing upon them a certain status and reputation that would be, at times, difficult live up to. However, such a legacy would be as important as landholdings and wealth. And sometime it would outlive both of them. This beautifully illustrated work is done on magnificent hand-made paper and painted with an eye to the most exacting colors of the period. It comprised five volumes and held almost 300 coats-of-arms. Appearing on rings, silverware, cloth, carriages, shields, swords, and any such thing as a man might claim to be his own, notable personages of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland all welcomed this genealogical tribute. We still can find the families and their crests in use to this very day.
