About the Item

Lithograph and screenprint with collage (silver foil) Prints are different sizes: 36 1/2 x 68 inches (92.7 x 172.7 cm) and 36 5/8 x 64 inches (93 x 162.6 cm) Published by Multiples & Castelli Graphics Studio Reference #72.E17c and 72.E17d Drawing on his early experience as a billboard painter, Rosenquist culled imagery from print advertisements, photographs, and popular periodicals and recombined these to create mysterious and bold compositions. Utilizing the visual language of advertising, described by the late American curator Walter Hopps as "visual poetry," his work has plumbed questions ranging from the economic, romantic, and ecological to the scientific, cosmic and existential. His work is held in the collections of many major institutions around the world including Art Institute of Chicago, IL; The Brooklyn Museum, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul; Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo and National Gallery of Canada; among others.

Untitled (Tondo) C
By Leon Polk Smith
Located in New York, NY
Leon Polk Smith (1906 -1996) holds a unique place in a long tradition of American geometric abstract painting. Born near Chikasha, a Native American territory later annexed by the U.S. as the state of Oklahoma, Smith’s parents, who were of Cherokee ancestry, raised him with both a strong sense of his heritage and an abiding respect for the land. Art would eventually draw Smith to New York where he would quickly embrace elements of geometric abstraction in his work. Many of Smith’s hard-edge compositions could be viewed as distillations of imagery drawn from the Oklahoma landscape...
