Georges Braque
Les Pommes et Feuilles (Apples and Leaves)

1958

About the Item

Composed of beautiful contrasting colors and sweeping line strokes that envelope the composition, everything works in unison to bring a warmth and richness to the quality of the image. Full of painterly textural features, the use of deep hues on a soft background makes the still life visually pop out of the composition. The apples are colored in a crisp green, and depth is created by the dark shadows that ring around their bases. Red veins stand out from the bed of leaves, adding color and beautiful detail to the still life. Brilliant blue backs the leaves and gives a cool touch to the image. The favored subject of the still life is apparent throughout the artist's career, and this work is a prime example of the skill and creative intellect which Braque masters in this wonderful work of art. Created in 1958, this color lithograph in eight colors on Arches paper is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val d’Oise, 1882 – Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower left margin. Numbered from the edition of 30 Hors Commerce (meaning artist proof) in pencil in the right margin this work was printed aside from the numbered edition of 75 and was printed and published by Mourlot, Paris.
