About the Item
Famed printer Mourlot describes the years-long development of this collaboration between the poet René Char and the artist; the project grew from an "Understanding between Georges Braque and René Char, an understanding suffused in the light that is at once obvious and mysterious" (Vallier, 267). Char determined the layout of illustrations and text. Working within the poet's guidelines, Braque created visual expressions of these love letters. Le Liseron vert shows a twisting plant with broad leaves and corkscrewed vines. Char's text on this particular page speaks of, "The whole mouth and hunger of something better than light - more teasing and gripping - breaks free." The image of leaves and flowers unfurling in a hot sun complements the poet's love letter perfectly.
Created in 1963, this original color lithograph is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 63/75 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work is one of 29 color lithographs created by the artist for René Char's book Lettera amorosa.

- L'oranger (The Orange Tree), 1975By Marc ChagallLocated in Palo Alto, CAMarc Chagall L'oranger (The Orange Tree), 1975 delicately illustrates an outing between two young lovers as the idle in an orchard. Though their faces are muted, detailed in a lighter color grey so that their facial features aren’t so pronounced, the young man stares in profile, gazing down at his partner with admiration in his eye. His visible left hand gingerly touches her arm, a subtle gesture of intimacy. The woman in the image faces the viewer directly, soft features gazing ahead of her as she leans into her partner. Clutched in her hands is a wire basket filled with the surrounding flora, fauna, and fruit. A small, yellow goat...Category

- L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)By Pierre-Auguste RenoirLocated in Palo Alto, CAAn intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris.
