About the Item

James Rosenquist (1933-2017) was one of the most important contributors to American Pop Art. He is best known for his monumental collage-style paintings that feature a melange of appropriated cultural imagery often "borrowed" from advertising. Shortly after moving to New York City in the 1950s to study fine art, Rosenquist became a commercial painter working on advertising billboards. For nearly three years he worked non-stop as a commercial painter, which would be both the technical training and inspiration for his aesthetic and ethos as an artist. Fascinated by the omnipresence of advertising, Rosenquist's work investigates its subliminal influence by subverting everyday iconography to challenge its socio-political significance. His work overwhelms gallery walls, swallowing the viewer with its authoritative nature. Here we have a much more pared-down example of the artist's work from the last chapter of his career. The work features five pairs of eyeglasses scattered about, each varying in style. Curiously, the left lens on three of the pairs are filled with frenetic dashes of tangerine, cherry red, and periwinkle, perhaps mimicking 3D glasses. Like the best of his work, we can turn to the title "My Mind is an Empty Glass" for additional inquiry. In 2003, Rosenquist was the subject of a full-career, international retrospective organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Today, his work is included in significant permanent collections across the globe including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the MoMA (New York), and the Guggenheim Bilbao, to name a few. Geometric Mouse
By Claes Oldenburg
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Claes Oldenberg (b.1929) is a Swedish-born American artist, renowned for his contribution to Pop art by way of his iconic soft sculptures and public installations. In 1962, Oldenburg debuted his revolutionary soft sculptures at the Green Gallery in New York. Three giant, squishy sculptures of an ice cream cone, a hamburger, and a slice of cake, swelled across the gallery floor, forever changing the way we define sculpture. It has been noted that Oldenburg's early work was largely inspired by Yayoi Kusama's hand-sewn phallic-shaped soft sculptures that enveloped the surfaces of ironing boards, sofas, and boats. Click here to see an exhibition poster featuring a later example of Kusama's soft sculptures. Ranging from voluminous hamburgers (famously on display at the AGO) to ballistic badminton shuttlecocks, Oldenberg's colossal sculptures replicate commonplace objects on a grand scale, often disrupting the environment they inhibit with curious and playful subtexts. The confrontational nature of Oldenberg's sculptures places an emphasis on the viewer, asking us to reconsider our relationship to these recognizable, but obscure, objects. "Geometric Mouse...

Dutch Hearts
By Jim Dine
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Jim Dine was one of the key artists who defined American Pop Art in the 1960s. Like Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Dine appropriated quintessential American images and icons. He used ubiquitous and familiar forms, like tools, food, and stylized clothing, as the basis for bold and colorful compositions inspired by Dada assemblage, Abstract Expressionism, and collage techniques. The "Heart" is the most celebrated icon in Dine's oeuvre. He uses its motif to explore pattern, color, and texture across mediums. This classic and iconic example of Jim Dine's hearts from his most sought-after period. Four coral hearts, adorned with flecks of blood orange, hover in the center of the work. The background features tactile grapefruit splotches that dance across the sheet to reveal and accentuate stretches of negative space. The result is a striking illusion of depth that simultaneously camouflages the hearts and accelerates them to the foreground of the work. Questions about this piece?
