About the Item
A basket with carefully arranged flowers is contrasted against a dramatic blue-black background. The showcased ikebana basket (kago) is in a traditional style of the early Showa period, and is crafted of finely woven split bamboo. The art of Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana, is considered one of the three classical Japanese arts of refinement, practiced for hundreds of years. Featured flowers include a stunning peony, a branch of magnolia, a cluster of narcissus and a delicate branch of cherry blossoms. This work has the oblong Watanabe seal in the lower left margin that was used between 1932 and 1942, making this a first edition. Shoson was the name that Koson signed when working with the publisher Watanabe. With the “Made in Japan” seal, verso, that indicates that the work was exported from Japan in the early 1930s. Original Japanese color woodblock printed in the early 1930s.

Ohara Koson
Ohara Koson was a prolific printmaker of the 20th century widely known for his kacho-ga, bird and flower prints. During his study with Kason, he took his artist name Koson, a partial adaptation of his teacher's name. Early in his career, many of Koson’s prints were muted in color and captured a sense of calmness and elegance. Koson’s depiction of birds are very realistic, the details of body and feathers in particular were always depicted with meticulous care.
