About the Item
This is an original 19th century hand-colored stipple engraving by William Hooker entitled "The Red Doyenne Pear", published in London as plate 14 in the 'Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London' in 1810. It depicts a red Doyenne pear on a tree branch, surrounded by leaves.
Sir William Hooker (1779-1832) was commissioned by the Horticultural Society, (now the Royal Horticultural Society), to paint a series of fruit portraits. These typically show all the elements of the plant needed for identification: leaf, stem, full fruit, cross section, pip, bud and blossom. Hooker employs a stipple effect to capture the texture of the fruit. The prints are also enhanced with gum arabic so the fruits almost glisten.
This beautiful and realistic appearing engraving of a pear has some faint spotting, but it is otherwise in very good condition.
