Antonio "Tono" Zancanaro ( Padua , 8 April 1906 - Padua , 3 June 1985 ) was an Italian painter and engraver .
Biography
After a promising start to a sports career, he began painting as an autodidact in 1932. He trained mainly in Florence , in contact with Ottone Rosai , and in Milan , where he attended Ernesto Treccani , Renato Guttuso and other members of the anti-fascist cultural environment. He traveled a lot abroad, especially during the regime , and was always a member of the Communist Party .
Works
His production moved above all in the realism , with pictorial cycles depicting the humblest social realities of both the north and south of Italy. Particularly known was the series of the Gibbo , a surreal and fiercely caricatural character inspired by Mussolini .
