To see our other original vintage warbird aeroplane posters, photographs and paintings, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" 1943 MacArthur name "Tony" Kawasaki "Type 3" - World War II Japanese fighter plane Original aeroplane recognition poster (1943) 63x47cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have many in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. This Kawasaki Ki-61 (known as "Tony" in the Allied code) was the only fighter with a liquid-cooled engine that the Japanese Army Air Force put into the field during World War II. It was this that made the Tony so unlike the other Japanese planes that the Allies believed it to be German- or Italian-made. While the engine was a license-built version of a German Daimler Benz engine, the rest of the aircraft was an all-Japanese design. The Tony proved to be a match for Allied fighters, due chiefly to its particularly heavy armament, good protective armour, and high speed dives. The Ki-61 was one of the few interceptors that could reach the same altitude as the the American B-29 Superfortresses (posters of which are also available). When the Tony entered combat during 1943, it could outrun, outdive and outclimb every Allied fighter except the P-38 Lightning. It was the first fighters to be equipped with fuel tank “fire-proof jacket", an early form of self-sealing fuel tanks that were inferior to Allied self sealing fuel tanks, but offered some protection. The Type 3 fighter was more rugged and able to withstand more damage than other lighter Army fighters. Because the Tony was so successful, a total of 3078 aircraft were built between August 1942 and August 1945. However, problems with production and with its engine kept it from being even more widely used during the war; the plane's engine problems included being difficult to tune and being subject to constant breakdowns.
