Victor Vasarely
Widely considered the grandfather of Op art, the French-Hungarian painter Victor Vasarely (1906–97) created eye-popping geometric abstractions that play with the viewer’s perception of depth, perspective and motion. A classic example is the 1937 Zebra, which consists of undulating black and white stripes that suggest the form of the titular animal through optical trickery. The work is often credited as the earliest Op art painting.
Such illusions were more than pleasing tricks for Vasarely, who insisted that “pure form and pure color can signify the world.” He wanted to “democratize” art by producing works in large editions at reasonable prices that were understandable across national and cultural boundaries. In the 1960s, he developed an alphabet plastique, or fine art alphabet, consisting of elementary visual building blocks that could be used in endless combinations to create original compositions. By employing this universal visual vocabulary and stripping away topical references, he sought to create what he called a “Planetary Folklore.”
Embodying Vasarely’s singular belief that art should serve a social function, accessible to all, these innovations may perhaps be his greatest contribution to 20th-century art.

- Abstract (Edition 24/75)By Bram Van VeldeLocated in Missouri, MOAbstract (Edition 24/75) By Bram van Velde (1895-1981) Signed and Numbered Bottom Center Without Frame: 37" x 24" With Frame: 37.75" x 24.75" Bram (Abraham Gerardus) van Velde was a Dutch painter known for an intensely colored and geometric semi-representational painting style related to Tachisme*, and Lyrical Abstraction*. He is often seen as member of the School of Paris* but his work resides somewhere between expressionism* and surrealism*, and evolved in the 1960s into an expressive abstract art. His paintings from the 1950s are similar to the contemporary work of Matisse, Picasso and the abstract expressionist Adolph Gottlieb. He was championed by a number of French-speaking writers, including Samuel Beckett and the poet André du...Category

- Bareback Act, Old HippodromeBy Gifford BealLocated in Missouri, MOBareback Act, Old Hippodrome By Gifford Beal (1879-1956) Signed Lower Right Unframed: 6.5" x 9.5" Framed: 17.5" x 20" Gifford Beal, painter, etcher, muralist, and teacher, was born in New York City in 1879. The son of landscape painter William Reynolds Beal, Gifford Beal began studying at William Merritt Chase's Shinnecock School of Art (the first established school of plein air painting in America) at the age of thirteen, when he accompanied his older brother, Reynolds, to summer classes. He remained a pupil of Chase's for ten years also studying with him in New York City at the artist's private studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building. Later at his father's behest, he attended Princeton University from 1896 to 1900 while still continuing his lessons with Chase. Upon graduation from Princeton he took classes at the Art Students' League, studying with impressionist landscape painter Henry Ward Ranger and Boston academic painter Frank Vincent DuMond. He ended up as President of the Art Students League for fourteen years, "a distinction unsurpassed by any other artist." His student days were spent entirely in this country. "Given the opportunity to visit Paris en route to England in 1908, he chose to avoid it" he stated, "I didn't trust myself with the delightful life in ParisIt all sounded so fascinating and easy and loose." His subjects were predominately American, and it has been said stylistically "his art is completely American." Gifford achieved early recognition in the New York Art World. He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1908 and was elected to full status of academician in 1914. He was known for garden parties, circuses, landscapes, streets, coasts, flowers and marines. This diversity in subject matter created "no typical or characteristic style to his work." Beal's style was highly influenced by Chase and Childe Hassam, a long time friend of the Beal family who used to travel "about the countryside with Beal in a car sketching...Category

- Canopic PrestidigitationBy Nancy GravesLocated in Santa Fe, NMOver the course of her prolific and radical career, Nancy Graves became a master of translating the primary data of soft science disciplines such as archaeology and anthropology into empirically informed, expressive works, such as "Canopic Prestidigitation." A large-scale, 23-color lithograph, Canopic Prestidigitation is as technically masterful as it is conceptually layered. Graves combines the Egyptian visual lexicon of the afterlife and allusions to European Renaissance masterworks to catalyze heuristic understandings of cross-cultural communication—Figures rendered in the hybridized profile-portrait style of Egyptian hieroglyphs float through a swirling and subtle maze of neo-classical architectural suggestions, while a disembodied hand reminiscent of Michelangelo’s "The Creation of Adam" reaches out through a frothing red portal. A cast-paper representation of Horus perches in the bottom right corner of the work, a nod to the symbolic language of the print and Graves’ multi-disciplined artistic approach. When read together, the elements of Canopic Prestidigitation become an artistic interpretation of the intangible qualities of social science...Category
