About the Item

Original lithograph Zao Wou-Ki (1920 - 2013) was a French-Chinese painter. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Zao Wou-Ki graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where he studied with Fang Ganmin and Wu Dayu. Zao's works, influenced by Paul Klee, are oriented towards abstraction. He names them with the date he finished them, and in them, masses of color seem to materialize a world in creation, like a Big Bang, where light structures the canvas. He works in triptych and diptych formats. If his work is stylistically close to the abstract expressionists he met during his travels in New York, he is influenced by impressionism. Zao Wou-Ki has stated that he was influenced by the works of Matisse, Picasso and Cézanne. His encounters with Henri Michaux led him to revise his Chinese ink techniques, still based on traditional Chinese drawings. Zao was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, and was considered one of the most successful Chinese painters of his lifetime. Tachism - China
