1989

About the Item

Beautiful, large Allan Houser bronze titled "Watching." The piece is signed "Allan Houser" and numbered 11 of the edition of 12. The bronze measures 23"h (including the 1" wooden plinth) x 8 1/2"w x 5"d. The piece is in mint condition and is an excellent example of Houser's work. Allan Houser (1914-1994) was a Modernist sculptor of American Indian figures in bronze and stone. He was born in Apache, Oklahoma in 1914 but spent much of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Houser was the grandson of the Apache chief who was Geronimo's interpreter. He attended the Indian School in Santa Fe founded by Dorothy Dunn and was the only Indian working in sculpture. He also painted murals in Washington, D.C., exhibited in the 1939 New York World's Fair, and had a one-person show at the Museum of New Mexico. During World War II, he lived in California and worked as a factory hand and ditch digger, but in 1948 he won a sculpture competition at the Haskell Institute in Kansas and modeled his first eight-foot stone monument. In 1949, Houser received a Guggenheim fellowship. He began teaching in Indian schools in 1951, was awarded the Palmes d'Academique by France in 1956 for contributions to Indian art, and retired from teaching in 1975. Houser's sculpture is seen in collections and museums worldwide.

Giuliano Tosi Large Italian Sculpture - Glass Head with Red Eye
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Fascinating Large Italian Glass Sculpture - Face with Red Eye. Incised signature on the base - Giuliano Tosi. Created by the famous Italian glassmaker circa 1970's - 1980's. The work measures 19 ½ inches high and 11 inches across at the widest point. It is in excellent condition with no damage and is quite an eye-catching objet d'art. Master Giuliano Tosi, born in 1942, hails from a lineage steeped in glassmaking tradition dating back to 1483. His journey with glass began at the tender age of 12, under the tutelage of Master Albino Carrara. Recognizing Tosi's burgeoning mastery, Carrara gifted him his corteo, an essential glass-cutting tool, symbolizing a rite of passage and an honor Tosi cherishes to this day. Tosi's expertise extends beyond traditional techniques, evident in his introduction of the external sbruffi technique in furnaces, a method enhancing color vibrancy and variation. His works have graced galleries worldwide, including Milan's Fashion District, Chicago, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, marking him as a significant figure in Murano's glass history over the past six decades. His talent for creating art glass pieces has attracted commissions from luminaries such as the Pope, Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, and Victoria Adams...

"Guardian" - abstract sculpture - Barbara Hepworth
By Susan Hable
Located in Atlanta, GA
Susan Hable is inspired by the work of David Hockney, Milton Avery, Henri Matisse, Alex Katz, Howard Hodgkins, Hilma af Klint, Georgia O'Keeffe, Barbara Hepworth and Constantin Brâncuși. With humor and a bit of mischief, Susan Hable’s “Don't Pick The Flowers!” is a body of work that is at once a refuge and a playground. Inspired by her sumptuous garden just outside of her Athens studio, Susan flows from one medium to the next from painting to collage to sculpture. Susan sees her garden as a place for adventure and daydreaming, challenging her perceptions of what her Art can be. Even a weedy ground cover has caught Susan’s eye, an overlooked invasive is seen in a new light becoming a dreamlike fairytale path. Her work asks us to engage in life, go for a walk and play. Susan Hable Smith is the artist and designer behind the boldly colored and hand drawn patterns of Hable Construction...
