About the Item
Gandin's 'sandwriters' demonstrate the physics of the pendulum as they draw their kaleidoscope-like ribbons in the sand.
The sculpture is signed and numbered by the artist on the base of the piece.
Artist Biography: Andre’ Gandin has been creating art for nearly 25-years. He originally found a niche’ in resurrecting old industrial equipment and finding a new home for discarded metals of all types. He began building the unusual sand writers and his art grew from that experience. Since then, he has broaden his interests to include flowers and birds and even the most bizarre figures.
His garden art can be found in luxurious garden estates and even hotel grand rooms. Many of his creations are just as at home on a Hill Country ranch or in a modest suburban backyard. Since he decided to be a full time artist, he looked for a media that was plentiful and easy to work.
Over twenty years ago, he discovered that welding was his choice. Steel is plentiful, it has properties that lends itself to beauty and can be manipulated rather easily. Polished steel has a look that no other metal possesses and it seems few metal artists are willing to take the trouble to go through the process of sandblasting and polishing with rotary wire brushes.
To him, it is the defining moment when you see something that came out of the scrap heap heading for the living room. In his opinion, to leave it as is, is too easy! When steel is polished and detailed with melted brass, and lacquered, there is no richer look!

Monument stands as a stark, enigmatic structure—part signal, part shrine. With its twin-columned base and vertical shaft crowned by a cantilevered horizontal arm, the piece recalls ancient markers or industrial relics repurposed for reverence. The form is at once rigid and reaching, grounded yet gestural. Its silhouette suggests a memorial to unseen histories—a tribute to labor, endurance, or forgotten architectures. The off-center balance and weathered presence give it a sense of quiet authority, as though it were a relic unearthed from a future past. With minimalist economy and ritual poise, Monument invites contemplation on permanence, presence, and the symbols we choose to elevate.
Artist Statement
I work with materials that have already lived a life — steel that’s rusted, bent, scarred. These imperfections hold a kind of quiet beauty, one that speaks not of utility but of presence. Though my work sometimes carries figurative echoes, I’m drawn to the non-figurative: the essential, the raw. Steel, once loud and forceful in its industrial context, becomes still and intimate in this new form. Each composition emerges through direct interaction with found parts. I rarely alter the materials beyond what is necessary. Instead, I allow them to dictate form — interlocking, balancing, and aligning until their relationship feels complete. The process is intuitive, the engineering elemental.Art, for me, is a spiritual act — a practice of selflessness and stillness. It doesn't seek acclaim or commercial appeal. It simply exists, honest and sacred.

Measures: 12-1/2 x 17-1/2-37 in.
This vertical steel sculpture presents a commanding, almost anthropomorphic figure, assembled from industrial components and softened by age-worn patina. A central oval form anchors the piece—suggesting a torso—while angular extensions imply limbs or mechanical appendages. The upward-reaching element at the top introduces a sense of gesture or alertness, reinforcing the piece’s totemic quality.
Sturdy yet expressive, the work balances raw materiality with suggestive figuration. Its posture hints at motion held in pause, evoking associations with tools, guardians, or relics of an unknown past.

Mid-Century Modern American Abstract Metalwork Sculpture, Modern Table Art Piece
By Angelo Di Benedetto
Located in Denver, CO
This stunning, one-of-a-kind abstract metalwork sculpture is an original creation by renowned American artist Angelo Di Benedetto (1913-1992). Measuring 13 ¼ x 11 ¼ x 7 ½ inches, this mid-century modern masterpiece exemplifies Di Benedetto's signature style, which blends geometric shapes and organic forms with the industrial materials of his time. The piece reflects his deep connection to abstraction and his ability to evoke emotion through the medium of metal.
About the Artist:
Born: New Jersey, 1913
Died: Central City, CO, 1992
Angelo Di Benedetto was the son of Italian immigrants and a pivotal figure in the American modern art movement. After studying at the prestigious Cooper Union Art School in New York City and earning a certificate in freehand drawing, Di Benedetto further honed his skills at the Boston Museum Art School, where he was awarded a scholarship. His talent was recognized early, as he won first prize in his first juried exhibition at the Montclair Museum in 1937.
In 1938, Di Benedetto's ethnological study trip to Haiti, sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Steamship Line, deeply influenced his art and broadened his artistic perspective. His first solo exhibition in 1940 at the Montross Gallery in New York City showcased his vibrant Haitian paintings.
During World War II, Di Benedetto served in Africa and later in Washington, D.C., before returning to Denver in 1945. Inspired by Colorado’s stunning landscape, he decided to make it his home. By 1947, he had settled in Central City, where he became a key figure in the local art scene. Di Benedetto co-founded the Denver Art Center with Frank Vavra...
