Small paper wall sculptures that are hand painted with encaustic and hand stitched to form tiny boxes that piece together like little portraits or figures. Light as a feather, these delicate boxes hang on the wall with a simple hook and small piece of nylon thread that loops in the back. Truly one of a kind, Donise English's designs never fail to delight! This particular piece was created as one of a series, and would pair well with others to create a mini installation. Bright palette of tangerine orange, blue gray and thick black polka dots!
Artist Statement:
Lately I’ve been looking at quilts. The quirky patterns have found their way into my sculpture, gouache and encaustic pieces.
Whether using hand-stitching, tiny collage fragments, gouache or wax, the obscure processes of all of the works share an intricacy that allows me to explore my ongoing interest in the sense of touch and the way that it embeds itself in, and indelibly records, human involvement in an object’s making.
The small sculptures are constructed of hand-painted, encaustic soaked paper that I stitch together to form multiple similarly shaped components. This method of stitching and applying hot wax results in the quirky, imperfect shape of each unit that are then pieced together as one would a quilt using peculiar scraps of fabric.

Donise English
Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her bachelor of science from Art History State University College at New Paltz in 1977 and MFA from Bard College in 1986 and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. English is interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. She uses gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define her pictorial space. For each piece, English creates a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention and others.

"Mirror" is a site specific installation that was exhibited in the show "Dialects of Place(s) by Land Report Collective at COOP Gallery in Nashville, TN. In this piece, Jobe uses industrial materials such as insulation foam, concrete, window screen, and graphite tracing paper to create a patterned structure that protrudes from the corner and carries the viewer's eye upward. At the bottom of the piece, we see delicately balanced concrete on top of pale blue insulation foam. The patterned concrete and insulation foam carries the viewer's eye upwards towards another pop of blue on top of the aluminum window screen frame. The screen gives the viewer a window in which to look through the piece.
