About the Item

Artist Commentary: Event 02.2000.015 is a one of an ongoing series of sculptures exploring my envisioning cosmic events and their existence in spacetime. This piece is also an exploration of combining different materials into sculpture. Keywords: abstract, welded metal, Artist Biography: Fred Klingelhofer, a primarily self-taught artist, grew up in a Chicago south side neighborhood. He received a BS degree in physics from Roosevelt University and worked as an engineer for 30 years. During those years he enrolled in art workshops and classes at a nearby community college completing courses in figure drawing, 2D and 3D design, ceramics, sculpting the figure, welding and metal sculpture. His focus has been on creating sculpture since 2006. Fred has exhibited his sculpture in a number of group exhibitions with Chicago Sculpture International, Art Prize (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Sculpture in the Park (St Charles, Illinois), Sculpture Walk Sioux Falls (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), and has completed a number of public commissions. He strives to engage the casual observer as well as sculpture enthusiast by varying the degree of abstraction and realism giving even small sculpture an architectural presence that can be entered and explored. Fred’s personal history influences how he creates pieces. The viewer’s personal history will determine how they engage and give meaning to the work.

All That Remains, Abstract Sculpture (Ceramic and Steel), 2020
By Fred Klingelhofer
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: I constructed this piece from the setters I used to fire the ceramic pieces of another sculpture along with some of the glaze test tiles. When I saw these "scraps" sitting together there was a visual harmony that suggested a new use for them. Brutalist Bronze Abstract Modernist Sculpture
Located in Surfside, FL
In the manner of Julio Gonzalez, mixed metal sculpture. Neo-Dada Abstract Sculpture: Assemblages Abstract sculpture followed a slightly different course. Rather than focusing on non-figurative subject matter, it concentrated on materials, hence the emergence of Assemblage Art - a form of three-dimensional visual art made from everyday objects, said to be 'found' by the artist (objets trouves). Popular in the 1950s and 1960s in America, assemblage effectively bridged the gap between collage and sculpture, while its use of non-art materials - a feature of Neo-Dada art - anticipated the use of mass-produced objects in Pop-Art. Assemblage sculpture is exemplified by the works of Louise Nevelson (1899-1988), such as Mirror Image 1 (1969, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), and by Jean Dubuffet (1901-85) and his Monument with Standing Beast (1960, James R. Thompson Center, Chicago). The idiom was considerably boosted by an important exhibition - "The Art of Assemblage" - at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, in 1961. Other examples of the Neo-Dadaist-style "junk art...
