Gio Schiano cresce nella zona industriale della Napoli degli anni ’80, avvicinandosi all’arte già da bambino. Mentre fuori ci sono le grida degli amici che giocano a pallone, il giovane artista scopre quanto sia stimolante sfogliare pile di Vogue tra le immagini della ‘High Fashion’.
Come nella moda, anche la sua dedizione all’arte inizia per le strade tappezzate di manifesti e cartelloni, con venti o trenta grossi pezzi di cartone che penzolano dai muri della città. Da qui nasce l’idea di sovrapporre blocchi di plexiglass, materiale distintivo della sua tendenza stilistica, creando sculture di piani colorati e sovrapposti.
L’arte di Schiano, è un’ arte unica, pluridimensionale , contaminata dalle Vecchie e Nuove Avanguardie americane. Vediamo l’influenza della Optical Art che si nota dalla ricerca di forme geometriche e colori vivaci , del ‘ Gruppo Memphis ‘, di Robert Rauschenberg , per John Chamberlain e le sue sculture in ferro ricavato dalle vecchie Cadillac degli anni ’50, dell’Art Brut fino alla Pop Art di Warhol e Liechtstein , e infine l’attenzione verso il primo Costruttivismo Russo.
