About the Item

"Circle and Waves" is one of renowned artist Hans Van de Bovenkamp's most graphic sculptures, playful and accessible. Fabricated bronze with visible connection points and varied brown patina. Van de Bovenkamp's work is inspired by myths, the collective consciousness, and subliminal learning. “I like dreams, myths and mythology," says the sculptor, who has been influenced by the work of Joseph Campbell, the cultural anthropologist. "A lot of my work is derived from ceremonial religious art." Van de Bovenkamp was born and raised in The Netherlands, where he studied architecture. Within ten years of moving to the US and graduating from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, he began showing his sculpture in New York, Houston, and several other states, and he quickly received recognition for his large-scale abstract works in bronze, stainless steel, painted steel, or aluminum. He received large commissions for corporate, private, and public collections as early as 1964, the year he received the Emily Lowe Memorial Award, and was featured in ten museum, embassy, and sculpture center shows. Today, Van de Bovenkamp’s sculpture is widely displayed in galleries throughout Europe and the US. A recently published, 160-page book spanning the artist’s 40-year career is available from Hudson Hills Press.

"SeaWave Maquette" cast bronze sculpture
By Gerard Tsutakawa
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Gerard Tsutakawa is best known for his numerous monumental corporate and public commissions throughout the Northwest US and Japan. One of his more recent iconic forms is found in his 'SeaWave' series, with the full-scale sculpture installed at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena in 2021. Here we have made available a cast bronze edition of the maquette of the already acclaimed public art sculpture. An edition of 20, this maquette is a rare opportunity to own a cast sculpture by the cherished Seattle sculptor! Finished in the artist's signature dark blue patina with brown and gold tinges and signed and numbered along the bottom edge. Gerard Tsutakawa’s designs are a confluence of the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim. Tsutakawa grew up with a rich heritage of Japanese design creativity and sensibility combined with a lifetime spent in the Pacific Northwest’s beautiful natural environment. Exposure to the esthetics of cultures around the Pacific Rim instilled a humanistic approach to his creative process. He gathers images as bold as a Tongan war club, or as sensitive as folded origami paper, and creates a subliminal integration as a new art form.   Tsutakawa apprenticed with his father, the late George Tsutakawa...
