Haringa + Olijve
Composition BRGT - contemporary modern abstract geometric cube sculpture

2022

About the Item

Composition BRGT is one of the most recent unique small size contemporary modern cube sculptures of a new series by the famous Dutch artist couple Nel Haringa and Fred Olijve exploring a more intuitive composition of the used colours and constructive parts. The cube sculpture consists of a few dozen hand cut hand polished plexiglass elements carefully stacked together inside a plexiglass housing. This results in a breathtaking one-of-a-kind sculptural construction with a unique and unmistakeable identity. It is authenticated by a characteristic signature on the bottom of the sculpture and comes with a limited edition full colour monography of the artists. Nel Haringa (1941) and Fred Olijve (1937) graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam in 1966 and then went on to study and graduate in 1967 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland. Nel and Fred have been working together as the artist duo Haringa + Olijve since 1969 and continue to do so until this moment. Around the mid-Fifties, a new generation of artists emerged in The Netherlands, adding a new chapter to the development of abstract geometric art. Artists such as Joost Baljeu, Bob Bonies, Ad Dekkers and Peter Struycken are of real significance in this field, on a national as well as on an international level. Nel Haringa and Fred Olijve are also part of this remarkable chapter in the history of Dutch art. Not only because of their oeuvre but also because of their personal ties with Joost Baljeu and Bob Bonies. Their contribution bridges the gap between the historical roots of abstract art and the present. The essence of the inspirational source, as reflected in their various bodies of work, also displays a highly personal and original vision in regard to form and colour as well as to the use of materials and construction. The oeuvre of Nel Haringa and Fred Olijve is clear, perceivable and process-oriented and as such it holds a strong objective "democratic" component. A quality that connects them to the principles of modern art but also of a kind that goes beyond retrospection. Theirs is an investigative artistry, calculated but never chilly, that ties abstraction to emotion.
