About the Item

Joël FROMENT (1938-2023) S, blue square, 2007 Acrylic on composite material Signed on the base, signed and dated on the back Height : 30 cm a very few minor stains on the base (visible on photo) Joël Froment attended the Lycée d'Art de Sèvres before entering the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1962. He obtained a higher diploma in plastic arts. In 1968, he became the first abstract painter to win the Premier Grand Prix de Rome, and as such was a resident at the Villa Médicis until 1972, under the direction of Balthus. Back in France, he exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and took part in the international MADI movement, which advocated an art that was free of shackles, playful and inventive. After a period of lyrical abstraction, weary of what he saw as repetitive writing, Joël Froment turned to minimalist geometric abstraction. Curves, straight lines and tangents come together under the precision of his tools. Combined with the symbolism and internal movement of each color, these forms offer a multitude of combinations. Joël Froment's plastic language, based on the relationship between geometric shapes and the energetic aspect of colors, brings him closer to concrete art as defined by Theo van Doesburg: "concrete, not abstract painting, because nothing is more concrete, more real than a line, a color, a surface". The artist's work, the result of successive experiments, leads to the application of the principles of two-dimensional painting to three-dimensional relief. The abandonment of the traditional support is accompanied by reflections on space. Joël Forment moved from large painted canvases to the conception of plastic objects, exploring three-dimensional form and inventing the vocabulary for a particularly original sculptural work. This sculpture illustrates this trend in the artist's work. It consists of a sphere supporting a parallelepiped, both in blue. The play on volumes, on different perceptions depending on the point of view adopted, and on light thanks to the shadows created by the two cracks that punctuate the composition, make this object a fine example of geometric abstraction in sculpture.
