About the Item
Goethe was a well recognized and lauded sculptor in wood in American in the mide 20th century coming forward. He is in many museums and had an active exhibition history while alive. He collected exotic woods both from abroad and in his state of California. This piece is in the tradition of Georgia O'Keefe and the play on what one might find in the desert and bring home. It references a animal skull type form and he would have been inspired by the particular piece of wood to have it take this shape. He does mean for it to be totally abstract and yet evocative of this reference all at the same time. A super piece for a more rustic touch in a home that has a ranch or naturalistic feel - dramatic!
He also did figurative work and animals and complete abstract forms. his works all sold in their time and rarely show up in the market.
