About the Item
Linda Stein, Spoon to Shell 894: Shells Only - Mixed Media Shell Wood Contemporary Assemblage Sculpture
Spoon to Shell 894: Shells Only is from Linda Stein's Holocaust Heroes: Fierce Females series, which highlights Holocaust-era female heroes.
According to Stein:
“The everyday spoon was like gold to a victim in a concentration camp. With it, one could avoid putting lips to tuberculosis-infested urns of watery gruel being passed around. Reading about sexual abuse during this period, I discovered a spoon was sometimes ‘given’ in return for sexual favors. In this series of work, the spoon became a metaphor of the victim’s continuous trauma. I wonder: what would I have given up to obtain a spoon?
Mulling around these various meanings and images, brought forth by the spoon in the context of women in the Holocaust, I found myself creating this series of box sculptures within an amalgam of mixed materials, words and associations."
Spoon to Shell 894: Shells Only was exhibited at Ronald Feldman Gallery in New York.
Stein's works are in more than 25 museum permanent collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Georgia Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in the US; Victoria Gallery & Museum and Manchester Art Gallery in the UK; Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland; and Konstmuseet i Skövde in Sweden.

Throughout her artistic career, Linda Stein's work has addressed issues of persecution and protection, focusing on oppression of the “other” through the lens of anti-bullying and social justice. As result of running for an entire day from the falling Twin Towers in the Ground Zero area of Manhattan, her previously-abstract work after 9/11 became figurative, armor-like, and she realized that she was creating visual and visceral symbols of protection, androgynous sentinel-like figures to stand guard against the foe. Her work often incorporates a family of pop-culture and religious icons like Wonder Woman, Princess Mononoke, Lisbeth Salander, Lady Gaga, Storm and Nausicaa, that start conversations about issues of power and vulnerability. Her works are in more than 25 museum permanent collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Georgia Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in the US; Victoria Gallery & Museum and Manchester Art Gallery in the UK; Konstmuseet i Skövde in Sweden; and Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Sweden. Clam Shells (Still Life Photograph of Blue/White Shells with Drift Wood) by David Halliday

Color Work Series
archival pigment print
edition #2 of 25
In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of everyday life in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This seaside still life of deep blue and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a concrete surface in front of a cream colored plaster wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects.
About the artist:
American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States
Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior...
