About the Item

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. There has been a tremendous renewal of interest and appreciation for Nevelson’s work in recent years. In 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson’s signature wall sculptures. Despite such monumental achievements, Nevelson remains significantly undervalued compared to her male peers. While this is troubling and surprising, there is a great opportunity for savvy collectors to acquire top works that are bound to appreciate. This rare edition in wood is composed of three vertical monochromatic, matte black boxes that reveal variations of Nevelson’s unique geometric abstractions and smooth contours. It is emblematic of Nevelson’s artistic vision and groundbreaking aesthetic. Most of Nevelson’s editioned sculptures were made in cast resin and were mainly sold in America by Pace, her longtime gallery. However, “Night Blossom” was published by Marconi, Nevelson’s Italian gallery, and is relatively uncommon outside of Europe. Nevelson's enduring connection to Italy is notable, as she was first collected in the country due to the parallels between her work and the Arte Povera movement. This connection was celebrated with a solo exhibition "Persistence" at the 2022 Venice Biennale, which commemorated the 60th anniversary of the artist's presentation at the American Pavilion of the 1962 Venice Biennale. Today, Louise Nevelson’s work can be found in major museum collections around the world. An increasing number of public collections are reinstalling her works in their displays from their permanent collections including the Whitney in New York City, which has the largest holding of her oeuvre internationally.
