ABOUT THE ARTIST: Born and raised in Tennessee, Clay participated in the Governor's school for the Fine Arts before earning his BFA from Wheaton College in Illinois. He has been self employed and living as a sculptor in Colorado Springs since 1996. From very early on, I have benefited tremendously from an amazing support system. Taught to draw at a young age and permitted to sculpt my bread at the dinner table, I come from an artistic family in Memphis, Tennessee. But with athletic aspirations also, the event that finally caused me to choose art lessons over soccer practice was my acceptance to the Tennessee Governor's School for the Fine Arts. This late high school experience legitimized my artistic pursuits, and with my parents’ encouragement (and money), I entered and graduated from Wheaton College as an art major specializing in sculpture. It was my sculpture professor who emerged to extend a significant hand during this time, and a curriculum that he dreamed up and implemented impacted my career path deeply. "Wheaton in the Rockies": a bronze casting practicum staged upon the colorful backdrop of beautiful and wild Colorado lured me into bronze for a medium and the West for immediate relocation. As I see it, art is personal. It manifests from the deeper levels of an individual. Because faith is an integral part of my life, when I sculpt, this theme surfaces consistently. Although I employ the full range of sculptural language from representational to abstract, my passion is to express the figure as simply as possible to capture the essence of the pose and create space for the transcendent message to resonate with the viewer.
