Reminiscent of the abstracted forms of Cubism, combined with Louise Nevelson’s monumental wooden assemblages, the intimate scale of Criswell’s abstract one-of-a-kind sculptures reflects a profound response to 20th century modernism. Based in Southern California, Criswell’s works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Nahcotta Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and the Pierce-Dunham Gallery in Houston, Texas.
In addition, his work is part of many public and corporate collections, including the Chicago Arts Council in Chicago; Pfizer Corporate Headquarters in New York, NY; the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Tokyo, Japan; and Disney Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Criswell is also a recipient of the 2011 United States Artists Foundation Project Grant, as well as a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grantee in 2010.

During all phases of his career Joe made art, first engraving and drawing before turning to sculpture. But it was at the Hudson Valley house that he turned exclusively to sculpture using the abundant wood of his land. He mills the wood into sticks, planks and blocks. The milling leaves ridges, valleys and cambers making every raw piece, unique. Sculptures start by putting 2 random sticks together, there’s no plan to start with, or drawings. But there’s always an idea about form, space or memory that guides them. The idea solidifies as the piece grows and eventually supersedes initial randomness. All the work contain the markings of its making.

This small, contemporary abstract sculpture made of colorfully painted aluminum is perfectly suited for a tabletop, pedestal, or mantle piece and recalls designs associated with the Mid Century Modern movement. Curved pieces of sturdy aluminum in hues of bright yellow, cerulean blue, dark purple and sage green form into a single abstract shape that exposes exciting shadows and changing angles at every perspective. This mid century modern sculpture was created by Hudson Valley base artist, Leon Smith, as a small scale version of a larger outdoor installation.
Artist Statement:
Why I construct sculptures is somewhat of a mystery to me. I suspect, in some ways, it is a continuation of childhood play, where invention, improvisation and often a sense of mischief, are a key. The simple abstract shapes that I choose to work with give me the greatest freedom to manipulate and discover new forms without being bound by specific representational imagery.
The opposing qualities of form are what engage me most. Balance vs. precariousness, stability vs. movement, and the organic vs. the inorganic. I play with these elements until another dimension appears and until the form is pleasing to me. I'm partial to the double take, the paradox, but only if the work's formal qualities con sustain interest and delight over a long period of time.
About the artist:
Born in Australia, it was Smith's first career as a dentist that taught him to make carvings and moldings. His sense of humor and that of his wife, Elaine, are at the epicenter of Smith's playful designs and titles. Riffing on simple, abstract shapes gives him the freedom to discover new forms and ideas. CHECKMATE by Rocky Dobey is a hand-inscribed copper sheet with black ink, acrylic paint, and asphaltum. It is framed in aluminum and measures 108 x 48”. It features some of the artist’s notable motifs – the number 13-1/2 (refers to 12 jurors, 1 judge, half a chance), a monstrous tower of brick with crenelated towers, inlaid with eyes, hooked daggers and barred windows, clouds with lightening bolts, tongues of flame drifting down... Though the swirl of black cloud near the top of the tower also rewards our attention – the engraving here suggesting floral as well as cosmic patterns, biological patterns. Checkmate also contains more subtle mark-making and ritualized ornamentation, such as the wheat sheafs across the expanse of copper, names of people are inscribed in the borders of the tower, vertical hash marks counting off months or years in bundles of five.
For over 40 years, outsider artist Rocky Dobey has been producing intaglio prints, etched metal plaques, engraved copper sheets and site-specific public sculptures. Working anonymously for the first two decades, his work has drawn attention to social and political issues like prison and justice reform, neighborhood gentrification, globalization, indigenous sovereignty, drug rehabilitation and homelessness.
With striking imagery of demonic towers toppled in flames, horrific machines and cryptic symbols of oppression, Rocky's work soon became a recognized and sought-after stamp of organized resistance. Several of his prints are held in collections, particularly the “Carnival Against Capitalism” poster he produced for the 2001 Quebec City protests against the Free Trade Area of the Americas. We are amazed by this artist's ability to achieve multiple flawless layers of acrylic paint, wiping it on and off with cotton cloth, to create a subtle yet distinctive woven texture on a smooth surface. The artist's work is inspired by patterns found in nature such as tree rings, rock lines, ethereal horizons, or water ripples. It appears as though a light source is originating behind the panel, glowing softly in a pale, dreamy green palette. This unique surface spreads all the way to the very edge of each panel. The 2 inch deep sides are cleanly painted white for a seamless finish. These panels hang flush to the wall by resting on two nails on either side of the panel, and can be arranged in any number of ways, highlighting the work's sculptural element.
Artist's Statement:
My paintings merge the detailed textures and colors found in the natural world with the linear and geometric patterns visible in industrial and architectural structures. The interplay of these elements drives the work and provides a platform for constant change and narrative. By simultaneously layering and removing paint with rags instead of brushes, my hand is directly involved with the process. Each piece contains multiple panels that evoke a nuanced and evolving universe.
Ginny Fox builds up each non-representational piece with overlapping streaks of paint that frequently span two or three panels. Working with rags instead of brushes, Fox’s hand moves along parallel paths, emergent colors cascading gently towards the edges of the composition's plane. There’s something vaporous to the outer layers of the work, the interwoven strands of color offering glimpses at the painting’s earthy base and hinting at the artist’s gradual process. Having received her education from New York University in the 1970s, Fox has since exhibited throughout the United States, especially in New York City and the northeastern U.S.

Artist Biography:
Fred Klingelhofer, a primarily self-taught artist, grew up in a Chicago south side neighborhood. He received a BS degree in physics from Roosevelt University and worked as an engineer for 30 years. During those years he enrolled in art workshops and classes at a nearby community college completing courses in figure drawing, 2D and 3D design, ceramics, sculpting the figure, welding and metal sculpture. His focus has been on creating sculpture since 2006. About the process:
From a mesh I begin to create the forms of the sculpture, without previous ideas, I let myself be carried away by the curves and counter curves that are generated. Once this process is finished, there are many layers of material to give body and strengthen the work. Then comes the polishing and finally the painting. It takes me a long process to finish the sculpture.
My work combines aspects of architecture, the urban environment, bright graffiti colors, and a duality of structure with chaos. Curves, illusory perspectives, geometry, and urban symbols are among some of the tools I use in making my work.
