"Maybe" is an abstract artwork by Stan Olthuis composed of acrylic paint on polystyrene mounted in a painted wood frame. Maybe measures 26" high by 30" wide by 2.5" deep. Typical of the artist, this minimal geometric abstraction resonates with a rich charge. It's a sculpture and a painting. The circles, the discs, almost touch but not quite. Stan Olthuis looks for expressive opportunities in found and harvested raw material – wood, stone, metal, rubber – and brings a fabricator's expertise to the work of making minimalist, joyful sculptures. Geometry is key, as are a sense of play and an adept's feel for sacred energies.
His work is exhibited and collected internationally, including private and corporate commissions in Canada, United States, France, Japan and Norway. Stan is represented by Gagné Contemporary in Toronto and New York City, and has select works available through the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), and Motokawa Gallery in Japan.

Gerome Kamrowski was born in Warren, Minnesota, on January 19, 1914. In 1932 he enrolled in the Saint Paul School of Art (now Minnesota Museum of American Art - MMAA), where he studied with Leroy Turner, and Cameron Booth. Both Turner and Booth had been students of Hans Hofmann, and were also associated with the Abstraction-Création group in Paris. It was from these peers that Kamrowski was introduced to a "kind of expressionist cubism." In 1933 Kamrowski was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League, where he would study in New York under Hans Hofmann. Unfortunately, immigration problems had prevented Hofmann from assuming his post. Nevertheless, Kamrowski decided to remain in New York for a short time, to attend classes taught by George Grosz. After a few weeks, he returned to St. Paul, and found a position in the mural painting division of the Minnesota FAP/WPA (Works Progress Administration). In 1936 he contributed “Synthetic Cubist Style” frescoes in the Northrup Auditorium of the University of Minnesota.
In 1937 Kamrowski went to Chicago to study under László Moholy-Nagy and Alexander Archipenko at the New Bauhaus (now Illinois Institute of Technology's Institute of Design). There he was exposed to new and interesting ideas regarding the role of nature in art and the "geometric basis of natural form".
In 1938 Kamrowski received a Guggenheim fellowship to attend Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He then relocated to New York where he met William Baziotes. Together they shared a fascination in Surrealist automatic writing, and both artists explored its possibilities in their paintings. Kamrowski was particularly drawn to Surrealism's fundamental appeal of intuition over intellect. He was interested seeking a process that "binds all things together...a kind of cosmic rhythm".
Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s while living in New York, Kamrowski became an integral part of the emerging surrealists. An artist from Stillwater, Oklahoma working primarily with wood and metal. I received my BFA in sculpture from the University of Central Oklahoma where I had the freedom to experiment with furniture as art.
After finishing my bachelor’s degree, I went and worked as a custom cabinet maker for 5 years. The cabinetry helped refine wood working skills and techniques. I then took advantage of an opportunity to further my skills traveling to Japan and learning traditional methods of wood working used for centuries. Upon returning back to my home town here in Stillwater, I have set up my woodworking studio and am focusing on merging eastern philosophies of minimalism and sculptural form into a functional beautiful artistic statement to add to the quality of our daily lives.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
What started as a childhood fascination with shapes and sizes has turned into an artistic endeavor for one Stillwater man who has discovered a unique way to use wine, wood, fire and glue to bring his sculptures and furniture creations to life.
Morgan Robinson says he was always intrigued with the reflections he saw in the school bus windows as a child. “I wasn’t as interested in what was outside the window as I was in the images the sunlight was creating on the window,” Robinson said.
That interest never waned. Indeed, it grew into a passion that would lead Robinson to Mexico and Japan seeking new ways to turn the images in his mind into the creations he would eventually show in art galleries in other countries and at home.
Studio Artist Beginnings
As a college student at the University of Central Oklahoma, Robinson studied jewelry making. He learned to work with metal designing and making small items such as pendants. He soon moved from jewelry to metal castings and decided to pursue metal as a medium for his art. Eager to discover new tools and techniques, he took a job at a foundry in Ponca City.
“I was still trying to understand metal,” Robinson said. “I went to Mexico and worked in a foundry there when I was 21. I learned to use tools I would have never been exposed to here.” Soon he was casting tables...

This Charred white oak mushroom acts as a stool or end table.
“There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages.
“Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. Chester Lee Williams (1944-1919) was born in 1944, in Durham, North Carolina. Chester cultivated a creative mind that eventually led him to pursue an education in fine arts and sculpture at North Carolina Central University (BA) and the University of Michigan (MFA). In 1974, he made his way to Tallahassee and started instructing at FAMU. Students at the university have a deep appreciation for the jazz lover’s insight and skill. A lifelong artist, Chester's work has been featured in galleries and publications across the country. The body of his work produced over 45 years has evolved from smooth and supple sculptures into the more angular and defiant shapes seen in his later works. Chester has said: "All of the works are me. I still embrace every one of them." Chester enjoyed traveling and exploring different cultures. His art was influenced by his travel and knowledge of African culture. He was an educator for 37 years, teaching at Voorhees College, North Carolina Central University and Florida A&M University before retiring in 2011.
He sold his first piece of art in the ninth grade to his homeroom teacher. (That early sale paid off — years later, that teacher’s husband, the president of a bank, commissioned Williams to create a sculpture for the bank’s lobby.) Originally from North Carolina, Williams came to FAMU in 1974, after teaching art in a technical high school, drawing maps for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and even working briefly for IBM as a technical illustrator. For several years he created plaques for
Marine Corps, signs for the Forestry Service and metal, fiberglass and wood pieces for the Veterans Administration. He taught ceramics, drawing and painting in a federal prison for 14 years, and said he found a great deal of talent there. His sculptures are nearly ubiquitous in Tallahassee. There’s a figure of the first black policeman who patrolled in Frenchtown placed on Old Bainbridge Road. There’s a bust of FAMU Marching 100 founder William Foster in front of the Foster Tanner

Artist Commentary:
Anachronic is a piece in a body of work exploring sound and the way that it inhabits space in the built environment. The pattern, repetition, and weaving represent the rhythm, texture, and syncopation of sound. This piece represents an envelope of sound, a finite piece of time, a controlled environment. It is heavily influenced by my time as a DJ and the practice of connecting patterns. It is about a controlled process - the merging of a creative practice with an understanding of materials and technique. In this object the marks of process are left bare, witness to the hand, craft, and labor. It is an homage to skilled work and the workers I learned from.
