About the Item
This monumental aluminum sculpture 9 feet tall is a signature Dewart piece. Blue Gilead is painted a vibrant powder coat blue and the word Gilead derives from an African American spiritual. “There is a Balm in Gilead” is a song Murray’s family would sing at all their gatherings. The sculpture has an uplifting and celebratory gesture. The circle at the center is an emblem of the unity of creation, what the Buddhists sometimes call sunyata. Murray Dewart, a Massachusetts-based artist, describes his art “as a parable about landscape where I’m following a plow toward a far horizon.” Dewart has built large public sculptures around the country and in China, Israel and Peru.
Dewart's first Gilead sculpture was done in the 1990's in wood and steel and is now in Israel. There is a bronze version ten feet tall that is installed on the campus Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester.

Murray Dewart
Murray Dewart is an internationally recognized sculptor with works in more than forty museums and public collections around the world. He was born in Vermont in 1947, educated at Harvard College and Massachusetts College of Art. His signature works in bronze and granite are monumental in scale, evocative and universal. Two Chinese cities, Beijing, and Fuzhou commissioned him to build large sculptures for their international sculpture parks. He is an eloquent spokesman for the arts and editor of the Random House anthology, Poems about Sculpture. He is the co-founder of Boston Sculptors Gallery, in 2022 celebrating its thirtieth anniversary.
