Naum Knop (Ukrainian-Argentinean, 1917-1993) Modernist Brutalist bronze figural sculpture with heavy verdigris green finish. Melted forms in the shape of an abstract pretzel like twist. Affixed to white stone plinth. Artist signature, "NK" side of base. Good condition, shows rich green patina and aged oxidation. Measures approximately 17.5 in. x 19.5 in. x 6.5 in. Naum Knop, Argentine sculptor, was born in 1917 in Buenos Aires, into a Jewish family of Russian origin from Ukraine. His childhood was spent in the neighborhood of La Paternal where his father had a carpentry workshop, a space in which he made contact for the first time with the technique of wood carving. After finishing elementary school, he worked with the teacher Luis Fernández and soon after he dedicated himself to furniture design. Around 1935, he entered the Manuel Belgrano School of Fine Arts . Between 1941 and 1942 he attended the course for graduates taught by Alberto Lagos and Alfredo Bigatti at the National School of Fine Arts and continued his training between 1942-1945 at the Ernesto de la Cárcova High School with Soto Avedaño, Carlos de la Cárcova and José Fioravanti. At this time he put his works in dialogue with other young artists such as Libero Badii and Aurelio Macchi . Around 1947 he made his study trip abroad. He goes to California, United States, where he enters the Art Institute of Los Angeles. At the same time visit museums and galleries. In January 1948 he organized his first exhibition abroad, held at the Hall of Arts in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. During this period he toured Chicago and then New York. That year he traveled to Europe; his itinerary includes France, Italy, Switzerland and England. As a result, he came into contact with the work of Henry Moore, Hans Jean Arp, Jacques Lipchitz, Constantin Brancusi, Umberto Boccioni, Henry Laurens, Ossip Zadkine. Artists who have an impact on the young Knop and whom he honors in his subsequent production. He returned to Argentina in 1949 and installed his workshop where he worked on ornamental carving and on pieces in which he oscillated between a synthetic figuration and abstraction. In 1956 he began his successful participation in salons , obtaining numerous awards at the national and municipal level. In 1959 he participated in the shipment to the 5th São Paulo Biennial and since then, to the success achieved at the local level, the multiple exhibitions carried out in the international field have been added. The exhibitions in Tel Aviv , Jerusalem and Rome (1966) stand out; Dusseldorf (1977); Los Angeles and Palm Spring (1981); New York (1986), San Pablo and Los Angeles(1989). During this period, his work matured, while he began to experiment with the direct wax technique, obtaining textured surfaces similar to welds that gave it a strong abstract expressionist feature. In parallel to his personal production and to the small models, the artist receives private and public commissions for which he works on large-scale sculptures and murals. Around 1967, the architect Mario R. Álvarez summons him to participate in a closed competition for the creation of a work to be located in the General San Martín Cultural Center . Libero Badii and Enio Iommi participate with the artist ; the bronze Reclining Figure Knop is chosen. Among the large-scale monuments it is worth remembering the piece Los tres soles temporarily located in Recoleta in 1984 and later installed in Maryland, United States; as well as Seated Figure (Reminiscence of Michelangelo) located in the shield of a private building in 1970. To these are added the numerous murals in which he experiments with various materials and techniques such as casting in bronze, openwork and reliefs in wood and work in cement. He was included in the The 1962 International Prize for Sculpture the jury included Argan, Romero Brest and James Johnson Sweeney the former director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The participants included Louise Nevelson and John Chamberlain for the United States; Lygia Clark for Brazil; Pietro Consagra, Lucio Fontana, Nino Franchina, and Gió Pomodoro for Italy; Pablo Serrano for Spain; and Eduardo Paolozzi, William Turnbull, and Kenneth Armitage for England. Gyula Kosice, Noemí Gerstein, Julio Gero, Naum Knop, Aldo Paparella, Enrique Romano, Eduardo Sabelli, and Luis Alberto Wells represented Argentina. The year 1970 opens a new stage of flowering in his career, this coincides with the inauguration of his workshop in the Parque Patricios neighborhood , a space in which the Naum Knop Foundation operates today. At this time, he continued to deal with characteristic themes in his production and other novel ones such as the American Figure of 1972. Throughout the decade, work on wood prevailed, especially the assemblages of small highly polished and smooth pieces that configure reliefs or figures of large and sinuous volumes. Around 1988 the artist opened the Naum Knop Museum in the Salons of the Serra Lima company. It will continue until the end of its life. Naum Knop died in Buenos Aires in 1993. Chester Lee Williams (1944-1919) was born in 1944, in Durham, North Carolina. Chester cultivated a creative mind that eventually led him to pursue an education in fine arts and sculpture at North Carolina Central University (BA) and the University of Michigan (MFA). In 1974, he made his way to Tallahassee and started instructing at FAMU. Students at the university have a deep appreciation for the jazz lover’s insight and skill. A lifelong artist, Chester's work has been featured in galleries and publications across the country. The body of his work produced over 45 years has evolved from smooth and supple sculptures into the more angular and defiant shapes seen in his later works. Chester has said: "All of the works are me. I still embrace every one of them." Chester enjoyed traveling and exploring different cultures. His art was influenced by his travel and knowledge of African culture. He was an educator for 37 years, teaching at Voorhees College, North Carolina Central University and Florida A&M University before retiring in 2011. He sold his first piece of art in the ninth grade to his homeroom teacher. (That early sale paid off — years later, that teacher’s husband, the president of a bank, commissioned Williams to create a sculpture for the bank’s lobby.) Originally from North Carolina, Williams came to FAMU in 1974, after teaching art in a technical high school, drawing maps for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and even working briefly for IBM as a technical illustrator. For several years he created plaques for Marine Corps, signs for the Forestry Service and metal, fiberglass and wood pieces for the Veterans Administration. He taught ceramics, drawing and painting in a federal prison for 14 years, and said he found a great deal of talent there. His sculptures are nearly ubiquitous in Tallahassee. There’s a figure of the first black policeman who patrolled in Frenchtown placed on Old Bainbridge Road. There’s a bust of FAMU Marching 100 founder William Foster in front of the Foster Tanner Music Building, and a statue of Florida’s first African American secretary...

Phoebe Adams has been featured in articles for the ARTFORUM and the "New York Times". Phoebe Adams has emerged as one of the Philadelphia area's most prominent artists and has also achieved national recognition. Her unique cast bronze sculptures, to which she occasionally adds copper and wood, are rooted in physiological phenomena, appearing by turns archeological and anatomical. They derive from the tradition of biomorphism as pioneered by Jean Arp, Joan Miro and, more recently, Louise Bourgeois. Adams' sculptures evoke a wide range of associations with organic processes such as fossilization and decomposition and with natural forms such as shells, ammonites, human organs and bones, crustacean appendages, pods and cocoons. Ibram Lassaw was born in Alexandria, Egypt, of Russian Jewish émigré parents. After briefly living in Marseille, France, Naples, Italy Tunis, Malta, and Constantinople, Turkey his family settled in Brooklyn, New York, in 1921.His family settled in Brooklyn, New York. He became a US citizen in 1928. Ibram Lassaw, one of America's first abstract sculptors, was best known for his open-space welded sculptures of bronze, silver, copper and steel. Drawing from Surrealism, Constructivism, and Cubism, Lassaw pioneered an innovative welding technique that allowed him to create dynamic, intricate, and expressive works in three dimensions. As a result, he was a key force in shaping New York School sculpture.He first studied sculpture in 1926 at the Clay Club and later at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York. He made abstract paintings and drawings influenced by Kandinsky, Sophie Taeuber Arp, and other artists. He also attended the City College of New York. Lassaw’s encounter with avant-garde art in the International Exhibition of Modern Art (1926), organized by the Société Anonyme at the Brooklyn Museum, made a powerful impression on him. In the early 1930s he explored new materials and notions of open-space sculpture. The ideas of László Moholy-Nagy and Buckminster Fuller were important to him, and he knew the work of Julio González, Pablo Picasso, and the Russian Constructivists. After experimenting with plaster, rubber and wire, Lassaw began working with steel, which became a frequent medium for the artist, along with other metals. His work reflects the influence of Surrealist artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Joan Miro as well as American Modernist Alexander Calder.A pioneer of abstract sculpture in the United States, in 1936 Lassaw was a founding member of the organization American Abstract Artists. Between 1933 and 1942 he worked for various federal arts projects: the Public Works of Art Project, Civil Works Authority, and WPA, the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project. In 1938 he produced his first welded work. He served with the U.S. Army, where he learned direct welding techniques. During the 1940s he experimented with cage constructions and with acrylic plastics, adding color to his sculptures by applying dye directly to their surfaces. In 1949 Lassaw was a founder of the Club, an informal discussion group of avant-garde artists that had developed from gatherings at his studio, on Eighth Street. During the mid-1930s, Lassaw worked briefly for the Public Works of Art Project cleaning sculptural monuments around New York City. He subsequently joined the WPA as a teacher and sculptor until he was drafted into the army in 1942. Lassaw's contribution to the advancement of sculptural abstraction went beyond mere formal innovation; his promotion of modernist styles during the 1930s did much to insure the growth of abstract art in the United States. He was one of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists group, and served as president of the American Abstract Artists organization from 1946 to 1949. In 1951, Samuel Kootz invited Lassaw to join his gallery in New York. He also had a summer gallery in Provincetown, MA. Lassaw had been summering in Provincetown since 1944, and in 1951 rented an apartment next door to the Kootz Gallery. Among the artists in the Kootz Gallery were Jean Arp, William Baziotes, Georges Braque, Jean Dubuffet, Herbert Ferber, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, David Hare, Hans Hofmann, Fernand Leger, Georges Mathieu, Joan Miró, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Soulages, and Maurice de Vlaminck. Lassaw is a sculptor who was a part of the New York School of Abstract expressionism during the 1940s and 1950s. Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, James Brooks, Willem de Kooning, and several other artists like Lassaw spent summers on the Southern Shore of Long Island. Lassaw spent summers on Long Island from 1955 until he moved there permanently in 1963.
