About the Item

Urbantree Negative I is part of the Urbantree Negative series which is composed of pieces of three different sizes: * Urbantree Negative I. Diameter: 50 cm/ 19.7 in. Edition of 6. * Urbantree Negative II. Diameter: 40 cm/ 15.7 in. Edition of 6. * Urbantree Negative III. Diameter: 30 cm/ 11.8 in. Edition of 6. Each piece of the series can be bought independently. The pictured 6-piece installation is composed of one Urbantree Negative I, two Urbantree Negative II and three Urbantree Negative III. In this sculpture, the artist revisits a recurring and symbolically significant theme within his body of work: trees. Ondřej reimagines their form through a process of geometric stylisation, ultimately transforming them into spheres. These creations stem from the earlier URBANTREE series. In contrast to the original pieces—characterised by flowing, organic interwoven lines—this new series sees those lines vanish, replaced by a precise negative imprint that becomes visible on the sculpture’s surface. Where URBANTREE featured airy, open spaces, URBANTREE NEGATIVE introduces solid metallic forms. The shift from openness to mass is central to this evolution. The title ‘NEGATIVE’ also holds a deeper reference: it alludes to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the term ‘negative’ took on a hopeful, even reassuring connotation—“the word ‘negative’ was frequently used with a rather positive meaning, implying the absence of infection.” Czech sculptor Ondřej Oliva draws inspiration from both the natural world and the everyday objects that populate our lives. Among these are food items, which he reinterprets with creativity and subtle symbolism, transforming the familiar into thought-provoking sculptural works. Material plays a key role in his artistic vision: using bronze or aluminum, Ondřej ensures his sculptures are both enduring and meaningful over time.
