"I welcome the continual emergence of change, evolution, and the inevitable challenges that
form a large part of a working artist’s life."
With CHEF'S HAT, a recent and evolving work, I am moving into more dimensionality and space.
My intention is to push patterned and embellished surfaces on paper from its naturally flat
surface into a more structural and spatial plane. This involves making sculptural pieces from
paper and experimenting with new construction methods using strips and lengths of paper
over-lapped and fastened together, shaped into objects with physical presence. I feel I am
migrating from the flat surface into the third dimension. I envision the paper constructions
as a landscape to be wandered in and out of, through and around, a space that invites all
and sundry to enter on their own terms. I hold firmly to the belief that my work exhibits a
playfulness that belies a more serious assessment of our social world. I am interested in how
something that is initially perceived as frivolous and celebratory can constitute a reaction
against and resistance to the shadowy world of misfortune, hard luck, and weariness.
Born in 1959, Lanie Gannon was predominantly inspired by the 1970s. Conceptualism is often perceived as a reaction to Minimalism, and the leading art movement of the 1970s, challenging the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. This Charred white oak mushroom acts as a stool or end table.
“There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages.
“Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. It welcomes a ceremonial vibe. “At the end of the day, that’s the energy we all crave,” says Shlafer, “who doesn’t respond to that?”

Pareja 07 is a unique contemporary modern abstract sculpture by Spanish artist Eduardo Lacoma from his latest series Pareja, Spanish for couple. The sculpture consists of two handmade constructions from cut, welded and polished steel, that are mounted together to form a true complementary couple. The outer element is 5 mm carbon steel which has been varnished, the inner element is 5 mm corten steel which has been oxidized. Due to the manual process of building and finishing, each element has its own characteristic look, sometimes very smooth, sometimes a little rough but always very sophisticated. From all sides it offers intriguing views, now more closed, then more open. It fits perfectly in a contemporary modern interior setting, on a side table, on a shelf or even on a plinth. It evokes feelings of mid-century modern design whilst being a one-of-a-kind 21st century piece.
Eduardo Lacoma (1968, Spain) is a practicing sculptor since many years, in addition to his career as an electronics technician. Being profoundly inspired by art during a trip to Barcelona in his teens, he taught himself the fine art of sculpting, combining materials such as iron, steel and stone. Mark Pomilio’s work focuses on the research of fractals, cloning, and single cell manipulation. His mathematics-based drawings serve as a metaphor for naturally occurring systems of reproduction and growth. When Pomilio begins a piece, he doesn’t know where it will lead; although his tools and marks are precise, the layering, repetition, rotation, and distribution of basic shapes are improvised to emulate a single cell dividing and compounding into a complex form. The process of cell growth influences Pomilio’s practice and is emphasized through his own process, the use of erasure, faint outlines, opacity and translucency, and deliberate marks. The resulting compositions are balanced, unified, and harmonious.
