About the Item

Reinata Sadimba Senza Titolo Scultura in ceramica e grafite cm 40 x 26 x 22 Opera firmata a punta secca. Opera accompagnata da certificato di autenticità rilasciato dalla Fondazione Sarenco, Salò. Born in 1945 in the largest town of the Mueda Plateau (Mozambique), Reinata Sadimba learned to practice the Makonde tradition related to clay figures production. Within the Makonde, sculpting is an activity generally reserved for men, which represented an obstacle for Reinata at the beginning of her career, when she decided to take over this traditional practice. Then, she decides to focus as a sculptural subject on Mother Earth as a key allegorical figure, rooting in the matrilineal heritage.

Porcelain allows me stretch and shape the clay in any way I choose and offers a blank canvas for my floral imagery and luscious, rich glazes to blend. The forms I create are tight and precise with a sense of restricted volume. I use bands around the form to constrict specific areas of each piece, while at the same time creating space for the volume and fullness to escape. The bands create registers to frame my drawings and paintings of floral imagery. The way I combine surface and form is inspired by Ming Dynasty porcelain...
