Roman Glass Cinerarium Vessel

Circa 100 AD

$21,000

About

Roman glass cinerarium, dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD. The hand-blown ovoid body with folded tubular rim, the base slightly kicked in, the separately blown lid with a thick cylindrical handle at the top and pinched in at the sides. An exceptional piece of Roman glasswork reflecting the heights achieved in glassblowing in the 1st and 2nd centuries. Though many were used as cineraria, these vessels were mainly used as containers for the home, as finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum testify. A similar example, though without a lid, can be found in the Corning Museum of Glass, New York, cf. Roman Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass. Vol. 1, no. 307. Height: 11 3/4 inches (29.8 cm) including the lid. Provenance: Giorgio Sangiorgi Collection, Rome, formed in the late 19th to early 20th Century. Christie's, New York, Ancient Glass Formerly in the G. Sangiorgi Collection, 3 June 1999, lot 121. Christie's, New York, 9 December 1999, lot 476. American private collection, Westchester, New York, acquired in 1999. Bonhams, London, Antiquities, 30th September 2015, lot 91.
