About the Item
Viktor Mitic
Painter Viktor Mitic is best known for his use of firearms as an artistic tool. Depictions of celebrities and historical figures riddled with bullet holes provocatively reflect on the senselessness of gun violence.
Mitic was born in Belgrade, then part of Yugoslavia and now the capital of Serbia. While in compulsory military service, Mitic came to see the gun as a potential medium for his art. He later moved to Canada, where he graduated with his BFA in 1995 from the University of Toronto. That year, he completed a portrait of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, which he presented in a formal unveiling at the prime minister’s office in Ottawa.
Mitic’s fame grew in 2008 after he displayed his most controversial piece, Hole Jesus, at Trias Gallery in Toronto. It drew widespread media attention. Over the following years, he made more works featuring images of well-known people, shot up with a .22 caliber pistol.
Mitic has participated in exhibitions around the world, including a 2008 show at the Muramatsu Gallery in Tokyo. In 2010, he presented his acclaimed Art or War collection at Gallery Moos in Toronto.
Although he has produced art in other media — including sculptures — his bullet hole paintings remain in demand with collectors. Mitic continues to create art that intrigues and confounds critics and viewers.

This tabletop sculpture consists of several stainless steel spheres of different sizes welded together to form a tower-like shape, mounted on a wooden base. Caldwell’s signature paint finish—layers of glossy paint mask the seams of each component so they appear cohesive. The distinctive iridescent paint of Nebula changes color from blue-green to light purple in different light conditions. A nebula is a cloud of gas or dust in outer space.

The artistic collaboration of Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat has produced a thought-provoking body of sculptures, paintings, and constructions. Nature, childhood memories, and everyday archetypes take shape in unexpected combinations of materials. The works emerged as the tactile and visual senses channeled the ritualistic power and materiality of selected artifacts. The resulting objects exist in a space between what they were originally and what they could become. A wheel, for example, is distorted as if seen through a prism. Their collaboration grew out of years of shaping materials into one-of-a-kind objects. Intuitively, the process of creating with their hands took an inward turn. Van Wifvat grew up with eight siblings and studied sculpture and environmental design in Minneapolis at MCAD. In 1979, he opened a storefront art gallery to promote the work of local artists. The space featured printed materials—art books, periodicals, fanzines, and postcard’s. Wifvat moved to New York in 1983 to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons.
