Luminosité changeante II - contemporary modern sculpture painting relief

2019

About the Item

Luminosité changeante II is a unique medium size contemporary modern sculpture painting relief by French-Dutch artist Olivier Julia. The relief is made from blue-painted textured wood with gold leaf and is part of his explorations of panel type objects. Well known Dutch art historian Jaap Nijstad wrote about his panel works: "The mutual and reciprocal influence of the colours is more dominant in [his] panels. Saturated colours, also applied layer upon layer and sometimes in combination with gold leaf, make these works the most colourful of his spatial work." And more specifically about the Luminosité series he wrote: "Wall objects in blue and gold leaf, strictly within a plane, the gold bands glowing and defined in a rhythm. Simple horizontal and vertical lines offset in the depth: wealth and sobriety at the same time. The block, geometric abstract but with the passion of Trecento, is an invitation to contemplation." Olivier Julia (1952, France) graduated with a BA in Graphic Art from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Until recently he held a tutoring position in graphic art at the same academy besides practicing as an independent artist. Since his retirement from the academy he works as a full-time visual artist. Originally his work consists of sober graphic art and monumental drawings, but in more recent years he has explored the dimensional possibilities of graphic art. He creates three-dimensional objects from wood, often painted in subdued colours that are characteristic of his earlier work: differentiated shades of grey and deep blacks. The work of Olivier Julia is focussed on the subtle interaction of closed versus open, of vertical versus horizontal and of light versus dark. His work is exhibited internationally and is part of many renowned corporate and public collections such as ING, KPN, TNT Post, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Vaasa Museum Finland, Royal Library of Brussels, the Wilploo Collection and the MAL Collection. Furthermore his work is part of numerous private collections around the world including Europe, the USA and South America. His work was selected for the main Dutch abstract-geometric and constructivist art exhibition Symposion 2015.

VERSO EQUIVALENCE 1 - acrylic, staples, pine wood, cut linen -Abstract geometric
By Linda King Ferguson
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting by Linda King Ferguson is part of her equivalence series, which began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. While typically, King Ferguson paints both sides of the canvas and cuts a flap on the the frontside to reveal the color of the back of the canvas, she unexpectedly does the opposite here. The painting is hung from the "frontside" of the canvas, revealing to us the raw edges of her linen canvas, stapled to the stretchers. Two oblong shapes of pink and red dominate the center of the painting. A thin semioval cut has been made inside of both of these shapes. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...
