About the Item
Bellino’s Cocatrix is a unique contemporary bronze sculpture representing a gold dragon made of antique bronze ornaments that are welded together in a meticulous fashion.
With heavy “Renaissance” innuendos, his work approaches our concept of “existence” and “reality.” Bellino questions the viewer’s awareness and convictions about the boundaries of “life and death”, “desire and fear” and “science and faith” as the sculptures he creates harness a beauty and intensity that speaks to the delicacy of the human experience, exhibiting the fragility of our own biological existence.

Alain BELLINO
Alain Bellino’s art is not only demonstrative of his extraordinary abilities in the fields of restoration and precision welding, but also evokes a deeper, philosophical discussion.
Some have compared the French artist’s sculptures to vanitas — a symbolic work that centers thematically on death and the ephemeral. While Bellino’s artwork reflects these concepts and he has cited vanitas as inspirations, his intricate pieces — which draw on the Renaissance and can be described as assemblage sculptures — invite viewers to discern their own meaning and experience a personal examination of life and death.
Bellino learned gold plating and silver plating from his time in his father’s atelier. While he worked for years in the restoration industry, it wasn’t until 2010 that Bellino changed course and expanded into sculpture full-time. Utilizing reclaimed bronze ornaments — including patinated forms rescued from antique flatware, furniture, lighting fixtures and decorative objects — Bellino welds and reassembles, producing a sculptural compendium of both real and imagined creatures. His steampunk-esque figures include dinosaurs, skeletons and insects, or objects such as violins and gas masks.
Bellino exhibited in his hometown of Nice and elsewhere in France, at the Hierro Desvilles art gallery as well as the Joel Guyot Gallery, Gismondi Gallery and the Carnolès Palace Art Museum. His international exhibits include a 2015 show at the Galrie Oxholm in Copenhagen and Gauchet Fine Art in Miami.

I was born in Nice in 1955. In the 80’s, I discovered the world of metal and ornamentation in my father’s workshop where I learnt gold and silver plating and bronze restoration.
After many years of practice and technical research dedicated to rehabilitating and re-composing objects, I engaged in an artistic way around 2010. The ornament that is torn from its original support then becomes the very structure of my sculptures.
Bronze ornamentations assembled by extremely precise welding are the base material. Weighted with the nobility of the material joined to their own history, they support a fragmented memory and they bring me a precious help as well as a constraint.
I got special inspiration from the Renaissance period. Vanitas are one of my favourite themes, typical of classical sceneries...
