Caitriona Platts-Manoury
Contemporary Irish Abstract Ceramic Sculpture. 'Josette'.

2024

About the Item

Contemporary abstract ceramic totem sculpture by Irish/French artist Caitriona Platts-Manoury. Monogram stamp signed to the bottom element. A wonderfully vibrant, fun and tactile sculpture in highly glazed terracotta. This artist's work is typified by its sumptuous colour palette giving each piece a wonderful energy and a glossy sheen. Caitriona's choice of simple forms cleverly juxtapositioned allow the colours to reign. The totemic nature of her work and the simplicity of the shapes she forms take us back to nature and our beginnings. This piece has been made from freely mobile individual pieces which can be twisted or removed and rearranged on the stand to create a different design. Caitriona says of herself: "I love working in clay - it’s such a versatile material & there is something deeply satisfying in shaping something with your hands…” I was born in Co. Wicklow, Ireland & spent much of my 20s in London. I studied Ceramics at Central Saint Martins School of Art. I have been living and working in Provence, France for the past 20 years.  I simply love making anything in clay and I value the versatility of the material. Everything is built by hand, using either slabs or coils.  My pieces are unique, tactile and joyfully vibrant. I choose to work in earthenware (red terra cotta or white clay) since the color range of the glazes fired around 1000°C is endless and hugely inspiring.  The forms are usually simple… I am inspired by art, by nature and by food! Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to choose a specific dish for a special meal; the color and form is highly significant. Likewise, a vase to showcase beautiful flowers… I also make large scale sculptures and objects – often whimsical and always one-off.' Measurements are for the square base and the height of the sculpture. The largest of the individual pieces is the white disc which measures 9.5cm in diameter.
